Defeat In Maine A Harsh Blow To Gay-marriage Drive

Full story: CBS News

The stars seemed aligned for supporters of gay marriage. They had Maine's governor, legislative leaders and major newspapers on their side, plus a huge edge in campaign funding.

This isn't over by a long shot. For one thing there are still 100,000 absentee ballots to be counted, and the current margin is only 30,000- even you troglodytes should be able to do that math.

Even if we lose in Maine this time, we'll be back next year and the year after that and the year after that until we are victorious. It took 2 times to pass Maine's domestic partnership law, so this will just take more time.

We are winning the vote in Washington state for their "everything but marriage" law, which means an actual marriage equality bill will be passed there within the next year as well.

New Jersey will pass a marriage equality bill in this lame-duck session & Gov Corzine has already promised to sign it before leaving office.

Washington D.C. will pass their marriage equality bill next month.

So enjoy your "victory" while you can, because while we may be down, we're certainly not out. We will NEVER quit until marriage equality exists across the entire U.S.

Marriage is not an 'equality' issue. However, I respect your feelings about it.

The news is not posting things as you stated above. I found this quick article:

Voters in the northeastern state of Maine repealed a state law that would have allowed same-sex couples to wed, dealing the gay rights movement a heartbreaking defeat in the corner of the country most supportive of gay marriage.

Gay marriage has now lost in every single state - 31 in all - in which it has been put to a popular vote. Gay-rights activists had hoped to buck that trend in Maine - known for its moderate, independent-minded electorate - and mounted an energetic, well-financed campaign.

With 87 per cent of the precincts reporting, gay-marriage foes had 53 per cent of the votes.

"The institution of marriage has been preserved in Maine and across the nation," declared Frank Schubert, chief organizer for the winning side.

I find it interesting when given to the people, it gets turned down every time.

As if gay marriage hurts any straight marriage. What a bunch of hypocrites! so many people use an outdated holy book that they dont even follow to validate the power trip to not allow a group of people to have the same right they have. How pathetic.

It is fundamentally in violation of the Constitution, the spirit of equality, and the fundamental rights of American people to put issues of marriage to a popular vote.

I will say that i'm not pro-gay, but i'm pro-gay-marriage. I agree with the religious conservatives that being gay is a sin. However, I think divorce is a sin, but for some reason we allow that to be legal.
Also, stopping gay marriage doesn't stop the sin. You're only forbidding marriage, not sex. In fact, as Christians, by voting on this, you effectively encourage pre-marital sex, since you are forbidding them to marry.

But the one thing I don't get... Can anyone give a good reason why the majority should be allowed to pass laws to take rights away from the minority?
Think about China where there are places where it is illegal to be Christian. You know what the Christians in America do about it? They send bibles, train pastors, and support the underground churches in China. What would you do if 51% of Americans decided to vote that it was illegal to be Christian in America???

Chirstians CANNOT make their moral standards law throughout the land. We can try to save people, but we can't take away the free will of people to make their own mistakes in sin.
Unless you are willing to make divorce, premarital sex, and any other sins that YOU commit illegal, we shouldn't make gay marriage illegal either.

Here's to FREEDOM, and here's to Christians realizing that we can't take away freedom in order to save people from themselves.

At least we didn't have to lie, cheat, and break the rules to win.

We may have barely lost but we did it with a prideful level of brutal honesty and integrity.....and we have money left over to finance the lawsuits against all the crooked organizations that violated Maine's election laws.

Daily Horoscope for December 19

Aries

It's one of those days when you'd be wise to mind your Ps and Qs if you want to avoid putting both feet in it or feeling like a fool. The trouble is that you're finding it hard to think before you speak, and you're rushing into situations without thinking about the possible consequences. All you can do is to apologize and try your hardest not to let it happen again.
