The police candidate must have a gun permit as a citizen before they become a police. The special favors they offer is irrelevant.<quoted text>
A police badge is a carry permit, for life, in that state.
The similarities between the USA & Rome are few, but striking.
We are 'farming out' our military tasks to forreigners.
An out of touch elite (Landed Senators & parriians in Rome; Corporate top level functionaries here;) rules only for themselves, and the American and Roman citizens become voicelss peasants.
Our leaders are increasingly the lesser of two evils.
Rome had less choice.
Our body politic is become so polarized, I feel I am speaking with a Martian when I talk with a national-level Republican, these days.
Constantine split Rome, and abandoned it.
Some similarities, bur many differences.
First, the citizen must have arms before they are admitted into the militia.....or in this case the citizen candidate must be able to , and obtain, a valid gun permit...as a citizen first. Point is we cant raise a militia if they people have never had a gun, cant use it. The original intent was that citizens would have guns, although State restricted, to be able to form a militia...in part to fight off the standing army....
I can appreciate your nuances in the Rome thing. To me the important similarity is debasing the currency to build an empire through imperial conquest.
