Public education starved for funds
Massachusetts public education is facing a severe funding crisis. Cities and towns also struggle to keep up with essential services.

"Costs continue to rise above the rate of inflation, especially in the areas of health insurance, energy and special education, as federal and state governments both continue to make gargantuan demands on our schools."
Massachusetts already has the 10th highest per capita tax burden in the country.
You need to learn to deal with it.
Steps are being taken to deal with the rich benefit programs for teachers and other school personnel. Take steps locally to better manage your resources. The people that pay for public education also have high health care and energy costs. Special ed largely deals with medical issues and should be paid for by the state, not the local city or town. It's true that Prop 2 1/2 limits growth of the tax levy, thank God for that. I haven't seen a tax increase as small as 2.5% more than once in the 24 years I've lived in this town. Typically the increases range from 4% to 6% and sometimes more.
Taxes are especially unfair to people that have no children. Sure, an educated society may benefit everyone in some ways but it is a direct benefit to those who have kids in the system.
I agree with your complaint about unfunded mandates. Get together with other communities and tell them it's impossible without state and/or federal funding. The people in your town, and others, are already paying more than many can afford. Stop your cry babying.
