Dale was a great guy. His time in vietnam earned him cancer from the agent orange that was spread throughout the country. He passed away way too early.

Lowell's cops of the 50's and 60's were great local guys who knew the people on their beats. They often bent the rules to accomplish the job but that was the norm and people knew it. I recall as a kid Tom Kelly, Car 3. Word was he would boot your ass if you did something wrong. Never got a boot nor never anyone who did. Fred Finnegan, Car 4. Sold used cars and parts while patrolling Ayers City, South Lowell and Sacred Heart parish. Leo Sheridan worked Car 4 early mornings. Our concept of tough guys were the motorcycle officers, John McCarthy and Frank Sexton. We'd see them a lot on Gorham Street, especially around Memorial Day when traffic to the cemeteries was bumper to bumper. They also worked Field Day and other big parades. Detectives, or Inspectors Hunter and O'Dea were Legendary, follwed by Capt. Fred Tompkins, JJ McMahon, Jimmy Donahue and who can forget the CSI guy of Lowell, Jimmy Burke.

Glad to see Chris Rouses mentioned: wonderful guy, a real gentleman, a dedicated lawman: killed in a shootout at a drugstore burglary when he was off duty, if I recall. A real pity. He was a fine example of how to do his job--not like the thuggish malingering goons we have today.

Small correction to your great post.

Don't you mean Virginia "McCarthy"? She was married to Paul McCarthy who was also a cop. They were friends of the family and they retired and moved to Arizona many years ago.

I would like to nominate the desk jockey in the basement who turns down every permit to carry and fid card that comes across their desk. Nothing quite like a jack boot nazi denying tax paying citizens their constitutional rights...I guess they weren't taught what SHALL NOT INFRINGE means at the police academy. Apparently, you need to be politically connected in order to get one...Oh how communist tyranny works...Do yourselves a favor and move to someplace that respects the Constitutional rights of it's citizens.
