Health Care Costs

Wow...I imagine this same scene playing out 20 years ago. We wonder why our health care system is out of whack. Here's a good example. For nothing more than a index finger on a 30 year olds left hand (and a weatherman at that...it's not like he needed it for his job) we take a Life Star helicopter to Boston and get a team of three surgeons on a six hour surgery. I hate to think of that bill. Probably over 15K for Life Star and who knows how much for the surgeons.
20 years ago that man would be walking around with three fingers for the rest of his life. Could he still do his job...YES. Would he probably be a little more careful around equipment in the future...YES. Would our healthcare system be as bankrupt as it is today...NO. You don't expend hundreds of thousands of dollars for a finger. You live with your mistake.

Excuse me, I'm not sure if you're aware, but when you completely sever a limb, whether it be something "small" like a finger, or something like a leg, your body goes into shock. Shock, if you're not aware, can KILL you. From what I heard, Mark went into shock and spent a couple days in the ICU. He completely severed a limb. Had he passed out, he could have bled to death! Have a little sympathy. And as for your "20 years ago" analogy, thankfully this didn't happen 20 years ago. It happened in 2008, where we have the technology to help Mark and to reattach his finger so he can POINT at the maps, return your emails and deliver your weather reports. Mark, here's to a very speedy recovery. I'm so sorry for your accident.

If it had been your finger, I'm sure you wouldn't have wasted any expense to regain use of it. As for the number of surgeons, keep in mind that many teaching hospitals have just one attending and then a couple residents to help out, so I'm quite sure "three surgeons" didn't cost much more than just one, considering this was microsurgery to fix vessels and nerves.

Butt this was the finger that weatherman Walli Cox had slept with nightly in his nose.
