When the 'wisdom' is wrong -- OrlandoSentinel.com

Full story: Orlando Sentinel

We're no fans of the ridiculously long campaign for president and the outrageous spending that fuels it.

I, for one, am glad to see the "frontrunners" are no longer guaranteed a primary win. Independents this year should really decide whom they support in the primaries and consider registering for a party to cast a vote. Until our nation permits independents to choose which primary they want to vote (such as New Hampshire recently did), they have the option of switching affiliation for the primaries and switching back to independent for the general. It is as easy as a phone call to Voters' Registration Office. Take for instance the Dems, if you prefer Obama over Clinton (or vice versa), change your affiliation for the primary to give your preference a better chance. Heck, even conservatives could do the same thing. Just a thought.

Unnecessary synopsis - nothing new added into what we already know about the campaign frontrunners. This is simply blather and filler.

Jaimot, have a little problem with the Sentinel? What idiocy does the Sentinel present that is not reflected in most of this countries news papers? In my opinion what used to be a slight in between the lines suggestion for some has turned into an outright endorsement today.

Although I do agree with you and Gator in that this election cycle is to long and has the appearance of the best candidate is the one that can raise the most cash. The length of this campaign and the media hype is only driving more people away from getting involved.

As for Independents changing their affiliation, I am one of those Independents and the thought of becoming a member of either of those two absurd parties makes my stomach turn. I am neither a right-wing theocrat nor a left-wing socialist which is where both of these parties have headed for the last twenty years or so. A pox on both their houses.

The political machine here in the State of Florida is never going to change and allow independents to vote in the primary which in turns means fewer and fewer people are making the decision on the Florida choice of candidates. As an Independent I will write in a name before voting for the lesser of two bad candidates.

I look and listen to the declared candidates and even some of the undeclared ones and ask: "Is this the best America can do ?" Then I stop and think back how we treat Presidents after they take office and I ask myself: "Why, for any amount of money, would anyone put themselves and their families through this meat grinder for 4 years much less 8 ?" We grind them up, spit them out, call them idiots, fools, stupid, and then we get all our panties in a wad if someone like Chavez comes over and says much the same thing. Well, after all, he must have thought that was the right thing to say because he's been reading and hearing it for years now. We have no respect for the office or the offic holder -- we don't deserve to have a President. Maybe we should just get a gold statue of something and put in the chair at the desk.

Perhaps thats why Cheney & Bush & Co, Ltd., have shredded our Constitution and replaced the presidency with a theocratic monarch. No accountability, no oversite, no Constitutional limits .... afterall, our "leader" presumes to have been called by "GOD" himself!

Respect is not something that is due, it is something that is EARNED. No recent president has done anything but squander any respect for the office the public might have once had.

Maybe its time to scrap the whole experiment gone awry and start over. Or at least get rid of incumbents, career politicians, and any "legacies" of ruling class families ....

PS NO MORE "YALIES," PLEASE.

Excellent post Captain!! Today's candidates are not the best we can do. We get the ones that can afford it!

To be honest with you, I think you give the voters in this country way to much credit. The political illiteracy in the country is rampant out there. Then we have the 40% plus that won't even participate. More people everyday grow to distrust and down right dislike the government that is supposed to represent the people and not themselves.

So wrong you are WALT SOBI - most 'class' papers i.e. THE WALL STREET JOURNAL, THE NYSlimes, THE LASLimes, THE BOSTON GLOBO have till recently 'outsold' their hard copy v. ad sales...It is only recently that ad sales have outpaced hard paper sales. WELCOME TO REALITY 101 SOBI!!!
Papers are supported by ad revenue. Period. Sales do NOT cover their costs in this day and age. Stop living in the past, Zeek, and WELCOME TO 2007.

You're living in the past, Zeek. This is 2007. Newspapers' lifeblood is ad revenue. You said so yourself. Now move on and get a life.

Independents ?!?
By definition you are loners that do not understand the system.

If you were to join together, you wouldn't be i N d E p E n D e N t, would you?

Here's an independent thought.......
The way the system works is you get a hole s**t pot full of money and throw it behind some nag and hope and pray that the other fool doesn't get elected.

Where's Harry Truman when you need him?

Nix Harvard and the faith based lawyers too. Romney was buddies with Bush at Harvard. Legacy students that get "gentleman's C" for daddy's money -- nope. Trust fund babies who got rich because daddy was in politics -- nope. Oil company board members -- nope. Relatives like Hillary -- nope. Lets just cross off the whole beltway eastern snooty seaboard insiders.
Get back to civil service protection for the professionals (I mean folks actually QUALIFIED for their jobs.) who keep the machinery grinding along no matter what fad leader is at the helm.
Make them DEFINE what a "small" business or "small" farm is. You would not believe the rich jerks getting millions in subsidies while family businesses starve.
Bring back unions to protect workers from robber baron corporations. It may take a decade to get back the governance which protected individuals rather than huge corporations and rich elites from other countries. Why does Australian intruder Rupert Murdock own 39 percent of our tv outlets? What happened to anti-monopoly rules. Bring back fairness doctrine to allow LIES to be countered on our airwaves.
Save our public schools from the privatizers. And the prisons from gold in guilters. Shame on Americans who don't do their job as WE PEOPLE.
