how many roots do you have to collect to get up to a pound of the stuff? Can you give me an example of how big a container it would be - like a wheelbarrow full or what? Thanks.

Prices are slowly going back up. Hold onto it as long as possible - this will make the prices go up.
Over $300 a lb. in Illinois now.

A lot depends on the size of the root. They will dry to about 3 pound wet to about 1 pound dry. The average root around here you will need about a shoe box full wet to get 1 pound dry, or there about.

One person said to freeze it on here, but I talked to a buyer and they said just put in a box and keep it in a cool dry place.

Where are you at in Illinois I am just east of Charleston about 13 miles. And yes hold on to it as long as you can.

I wish somebody would show me how to find and dig the stuff - esp at those prices! Maybe somebody will share a story or two about their search for ginseng and how it ended up.(Strictly for entertainment and learning purposes - they can keep the locations secret.) Evidently it's a rather important part of the economy around here (SW VA). I recall decades back - it would have been the late 70's, listening to a family friend talk about going out to look for 'seng. But is it used by individuals for anything (like a tea)? Or has it pretty much strictly been dug for resale to outside companies?

Thanks.

Are you talking about the price/pound of product, or the price I would have to pay you to teach me?

It would be an interesting way to spend an afternoon - a warm afternoon I might add (don't like the chilly weather).

How much ginseng do you suppose there is in the hills around here (SW VA)? Is it being used up? There's not all that much building development, but there is a lot of logging operations and clearing for mining going on around the region. What effect does that have on it?

I don't think I ever got an answer about its uses. Is it being sold to companies to use in compounds of some sort they market? What would an individual do with the stuff? Roll in up and smoke it?(JK). Seriously, is it for the most part harvested and sold to corporations or <gasp> some overseas market (Asia) that use it in their eastern medicine practices?
