As always Smithfield/ Cumberland Gap Provision will not have to pay anything. This happens more often then we as citizens of Middlesboro think. Do you think for a company that pays their employees 18 pounds of bologna that expires in a few days instead of profit sharing checks will ever pay any fines?

Does the workers at Smithfield really think they will get any bonus checks. This will be their excuse for the next two-three years while the salary workers still get theirs. Yes, it is in the paper. Smithfield will probably be fined up to 25,000 dollars for each offence. There are 6 of them. Oh yeah, per day. Do the math. Smithfield is going to be in the red ink in Middlesboro for some time. Sorry workers, no bonus again.

You people need to worry about the people who work there feeding their families instead of worring that Smithfield may not pay a fine for the accident they had. These companies don't do this on purpose. It was an accident , look at it this way, what if they closed their doors, look at the people that would be out of a job. Let's see Middlesboro supply about 500 people with a job. They probably dont have that many jobs in the whole area. They need to wait up as well as you.

I understand it was an accident, but fyi dont you read the news paper? this company donated $60,000. for the fall festival, wonderful for the community, crappy for the employees, not a penny for their hard work, just bologna and tee shirts not once but twice, with the money they spent on the shirts, bologna and lets just say they have 600 employees, at least out of the $60,000 they would have put $100.00 in each employees hand . they get the county glory and the employees have to pay $3.00 to get in to pay $5.00 for a funnel cake???? at least when rd was there they got tickets for drawings to win something, this time not a thing... no money, no drawings, no profit sharing not a thing except 4 miles of dead fish !!!! put that in your pipe and smoke it!!! you must be one of the job scared brown nosers out there! dont care about the spill, just work your butt off and be glad you got a job... well i can tell you right now a lot of people work their tails off and then ask their employers to fill out papers so they can get their food stamps//// what is with this i gotta pay all the time even for the liars and cheats of this town, and now cant even get the money they say they didnt make to share with us,, get a life, or at least some guts to stand up for yourself. For Just Me, No I do not work there and i don't live in Middlesboro, and I am not a brown noser. I have seen a lot of people in areas like Middlesboro lose their jobs and not able to find another one.I believe you all need to get your story straight about what Smithfield is donating. I am sure if they have to pay a fine, they will. I just think there is plenty of other stuff for you all to grip about other than Smithfield and fish.

no one even knew about the ammonia until someone who left work and talked about it outside of work. and they was very little that spilled anyway, but Smithfield at least acknowledged it and had it cleaned up the right way so that it would not bother anybody, as for the noise, never heard anyone complain when it was Cumberland Gap. Get some ear plugs.

For your information, it IS CUMBERLAND GAP PROVISIONS...I live in the neighborhood and they explained it was something new and that's what makes the noise, and as for the ammonia, I hope that if or when you have a child that he or she doesn't have breathing problems. I don't know why I'm bothering replying this, because it is obvious that you are a uneducated idiot.

can't get earplugs or I would, I have to listen for police busting on my door telling me to get out of my house like they did Halloween two years ago when this leak happened before. You don't live in the neighborhood so shut your mouth.

You all know so much about it that someone else had to tell you who really owned the company. You might as well quit spending your time griping about it because you could not do anything about the noise before and you can't do anything about it now. It was probabley a Halloween joke when you were told to get out of your house and you didn't know the difference so I would not call anyone an uneducated idiot.

Listen, I live beside Smithfield. It was not a Halloween joke because on Oct 31st 2007 we were evacuated from our home because of a ammonia leak at Smithfield, which was at the time, Cumberland Gap Provisions. The Middlesboro Police Department evacuated the whole back west side of town. It will possibly happen again, and if it does, they are going to have a plan where when they are evacuated, they will go to a designated spot in Middlesboro. That is the facts...God bless you and have a good day. In the meantime, pray for the ones who live near the plant.

i work there and the spill two years ago happened as for this one yes they acknowledged it and cleaned it. asfar as profit sharing was never a gaurentee with rd either yes we got one but there were times we didnt, and besides smithfield is much larger than cumberland gap so im sure they have the money to pay fines with, that wont affect the employees. dont hear any complaints about getting 40 hrs a week instead of twenty all summer. and the raises. never saw that with rd did we, what affects us more is employees not paying attention or on purpose whatever the case may be and contaminating the meat so it has to be thrown away. that hurts profit more. ive heard more complaints before smithfield about rd from long timers and how rd would wash off rotten meat and resmoke it and send it out. and that came from alot of those that have been there for 10 yrs or more. so if you dont work there or know your facts shut up.

no company is perfect and has their problems and will have accidents but look at all the people that work there that are drunks and pillheads, way to many. and those of us that dont do these things have to work with these a**holes everyday and deal with it because we need a job for our famalies not a habit. and if everyone so against smithfield why didnt you vote the union in and fight them, maybe because you know its better but it will take time to iron out the wrinkles im glad to have 40 plus hours on my check helps pay my bills easier, no i may not like all the decisions or agree with all the higher ups but i have a job and my life is honest

I appreciate that you work and that you arn't on drugs...good for you! But please understand that the neighbors who have to live near the plant that can't afford to move, have some serious health issues concerning the ammonia leaks. Our baby had to be flown by lifestar because she had to inhale that chemical halloween, two years ago. The lining of her lungs were irritated because of the ammonia, and we had to move, we could afford to move. How about the people who can't afford to move and have to indure maybe being evacuated during the middle of the night, or even in the day. Just please have some understanding of how you would feel if it was your child.

Well, I don't know why don is complaining if they dont live there any more, like I said before, accidents happen and will continue to happen. But get a real life and grip about something else besides Smithfield. They will pay their fines if they have to and go on about their business and getting on her and writing stuff doesn't bother them one bit.

I may not live near Smithfield, but I do worry about my neighbors that still live there, I worry about my neighbor who has a newborn, I worry about the elderly lady who can't get out of her house if a emergency were to happen, I worry about the woman that has a child with asthma, I quess I should have the attitude just not to worry anymore, why should I care? I know Smithfield doesn't.
