Those who are traumatized by gun violence, want it to stop. They support the anti-gun democrat.

Those in the district who HAVE GUNS, probably didn't bother voting and probably don't have their guns registered, nor do they plan to register their guns later.

It's all about 'appearances'--'ANTI GUN' wins, but nothing will be any different.

Unless penalties get severe enough to make a difference.

Good point Larry, they need to make the punishment for mass murder much more severe. That will surely stop the psychopaths and gang bangers.

Your sarcasm is not lost on me. If the penalty for selling or owning firearms illegally were, say, life imprisonment, fewer gangbangers would have access to guns.
As for psychopaths, they'll never disappear. However, banning assault weapons might make it a bit more difficult for them to mow people down by the dozens. In addition, judging from Topix, I think there are many more psychopathic gun freaks in this country than might be imagined.

Glad to hear it Larry. The penalty for murder is life in prison or death. We're not talking run of the mill crime. How much more can we give them? Life in prison has not slowed the gang bangers one bit. Time to punish those that abide by the law - right?

What you say about life in prison for gangbangers is simply untrue, not by a longshot, so I'll ignore that part of your comment.
If you abide by the law, chances are you will not be punished, unless you consider background checks and banning assault weapons for civilian use to be punishment.

Larry - Could I consider it punishment if my grandson would need a background check to inherit my shotgun - I would. I would consider it punishment if my hunting buddy wanted to sell me his rifle and we both had to go to the local gun store and pay them $50 or $100 to run background checks on us. You do know that it is ALL gun transfers, not just your 'assault weapons' that will be tracked with permanent government records. You do know that is what is on the table right? Makes you wonder why they would need to know what law abiding people have, doesn't it?

You may be law-abiding, but the next person may not. That is why we need background checks. Personal freedom stops at the water's edge, where societal freedom begins.

A law requiring background checks will create another layer of beuracracy, additional costs and aggravation for the law-abiding person.

The non-law-abiding person you mention above, will continue to obtain firearms in a non-law-abiding way.

If anything, a new law will INCREASE the demand for underground purchases of firearms.
