I hate golf, so this doesn't affect me, but as far as the game goes, aren't cigarette & cigar butts inappropriate items to be tossed onto the golf course? Will smokers have the discipline to discard them in proper receptacles?

Jean,smokers are addicted slobs. Their "rights" include tossing their butts wherever they please and someone else is supposed to clean up after them. They're whining addicts. They can't even stop to play golf.

I can't wait to see the outrage when they start banning and taxing fat people treats. We'll call it the Twinkie Tax. Too bad so many people can't see that these nuisance bans are outrageous and we are losing freedom every day. Christ almighty they just tried to ban live music with a silly ordinance requiring promoter licensing. Whatever. I hate cigars AND golf, but I guess the constitution guarantees both of them. Mostly I hate the cigar smoking culture, which consists almost exclusively of back-slapping good old boys. The partners at my former firm used to smoke cigars in the office, despite the fact that it was a non-smoking building. At least on the golf course I didn't have to smell them. The golf course can probably put those portable ash trays next to the ball-washers.

The golf course is officially the last haven to have a smoke, a drink, and have fun doin' it. Always put the butt in the cans, not hard to leave 'em in the cart until the next tee. I think banning smoking on golf courses would have a more profound affect than the statewide smoking ordinance. Not many people drive down the street to golf, I know I'd be willing to travel somewhere else in the 'burbs to be able to have a smoke and tee 'em high.....
I agree with Christine, try putting huge excise taxes on something different that caters to a certain demographic. Probably more b**ching and whining than you see from smokers, we just take our lumps and move on....

The facts are what they are on second-hand smoke. Check out the CDC or Surgeon General's website and, if you are literate, you will see that second hand tobacco smoke is poisonous, carcinogenic and more potent in chemicals than primary smoke. All this talk about restricting rights is nonsense. If anything, it's increasing the rights of people to go where they please without having to breathe in that garbage.

Even if you do believe the secondhand smoke lies (facts were made up and data was purposely changed), why would you be worried about secondhand smoke on a golf course? As usual, anti-tobacco people use some made-up facts to cover the real reason they want smoking banned: they don't like the smell, but that's not enough of a reason. Try to stay on topic. Thanks.

as a former smoker, this seems harsh, but as a person who hates it when the smell of a freshly-mowed green gets cut with the stink of cigarette smoke, I say hooray.

Banning smoking on a golf course is simply insane. A club has the right to do so if they want, but for the city to try it is simply infringing WAY too far on private property rights. Don't even try to claim that non-smoking golfers are somehow harmed by someone lighting up in a big open space.

Golf is such an elitist/snobbish sport - I'm glad that if it's one public place that people can still smoke, that it's on a golf course where dumb morons can chase a small ball for a few hours and pay to do it as well.
