Excellent work!
We need more of this reports to bring the awareness to the public of the importance of the Early Childhood Education (ECE)field. The effects of early childhood education is not only in preparation for Kindergarten entry, but also for life long learning and the development of future America's citizens. There are many research studies, such as the Ypsilanti Perry Preschool and the Carolina Abecedarian Project as the most reputable ones, that shows that the moneys invested in early education is well worth it.
If there are any doubts regarding the importance of quality early care and education, a review should be done on scientific studies of the brain development and human's early life experiences.
Lastly, many private centers that do not receive any state or federal subsidy, are struggling to keep their doors open as well or struggling to provide a quality service because middle class working parents are not able to afford the cost of quality services.

Yes, great idea. While my kids are in classrooms with thirty and better students the district dumps money into a pre-school babysitting service. Yes sir, the welfare brats who go there are busy a few hours a day so their parents can go use the Link card to buy t.v. dinners and snack cakes.

Keep up the good work Granite City. While other cities are dropping this daycare service and turning it back over to the commercial establishments which are already struggling to keep the doors open, you compete with them using government dollars.

FYI Hopeless, my grandkid goes there AND we never collected any kind of financial nothing. I make good money at a job i've been at for almost 20 years. My grandbaby has learned so much there, she will be one of the top students when she starts school. And u hit it right on the nose, schools now do have 30+ students in class so why not teach them before they have to face that challenge. this School gives these kids the Headstart that all kids need now days. KEEP IT OPEN!!! Hopeless quit being negative

Gossip, you make good points. However, according to the Post Dispatch, the Granite City High School is one of the worst in the area. So why not use some resources to help those kids who are preparing to go into the real world and the work force? Let me ask you this and be honest. IF you had to pay for these services like you would at a private facility, would you send your grandchild there? Be honest! In my opinion it is the parent's responsibility to educate their child prior to kindergarten. Make the parent do their job.

The highschool students are important but so are our preschool children. Thats where your learning habits start. Neither one is more important than the other so dont take away from one to give to the other, either way. I'm 38 i went to Preschool in GC if i had that opportunity whay cant our kids of today have it to. They have alot more to face now days.

Hopeless, I understand that our high school is not scoring well, but money is entirely to blame. Those scores come from the ISAT testing information, and when you have students that do not care, or parents who do not care, you get scores that reflect that. As for the ECC, my son goes there because he needs speech therapy. It is not because I need a babysitter. I also do not have a link card or any government assistance. THe problem with our schools is in the hands of the students, parents and at times the staff.

I just looked into this school for my child for the Fall. The number one reason I want this school is for the transportation. I would gladly pay and I would pay extra for transportation. I firmly believe in introducing kids to some type of schooling before Kindergarten. Kindergarten isn't like it was when I was there.
I'm 29 and when I went to kindergarten I was there maybe 4 hours with a snack/lunch, nap time and play time. Preschool wasn't necessary then NOW it is. Kids learn more and faster under the age of 5 take advantage of that time.
If anyone knows of a private preschool with transportation please post.

This school needs to stay open. The program there helps get children ready for Kindergarten who would otherwise probably fall through the cracks if left to their "parents as teachers." Whether it is economics, or whatever, some parents just can't do the job. Some of the parents can't read or write or spell.. ever notice here on Topix the poor writing ability and lack in communication skills. Spending money on teaching young kids is never a waste of effort, etc. Hopefully, Granite City will find a solution to improving schools for all grade levels. Granite City used to be a top school district back in the day.

Why did they stop bus service? But keep it for special ed? I'm not talking wheelchair type handicap, although their patent should have to transport just like the rest of us. Just because your child has a delay in speech or motor skill and considered special should not have the privilege of transport the others kids are denied. There are so mNy 3 and 4 year olds missing out because they don't hAve a reliable ride.
