Deaf inmates sue for access to interpreters

This combination of undated photos provided by the Illinois Department of Corrections shows 11 inmates who are plaintiffs in a class-action lawsuit that was filed Wednesday in Chicago claiming Illinois violates the rights of deaf prisoners by limiting access to interpreters and other assistance behind bars.

Same on the Department of corrections. How would one of them like having a family member that was deaf and and could not understand his rights.

They're criminals, as far as I'm concerned they shouldn't have any rights. Maybe they will actually hate jail enough and try not to go back once they get out. That would be a good thing!!!

I doubt it most criminals commit a crime within 48 hours of their release!

Prisoners certainly do not have a right to luxuries, they do have a right to effective communication. Training guards and other staff members of a prison facility in alternative communication methods would be the right thing to do.

You have to take anger and revenge out of the equation and treat prisoners with a basic level of decency, otherwise they will not be able to rehabilitate.

Over punishment backfires and sends back a citizen that will reoffend and probably in an escalated manner.

And, yes, one does recognize that convicted criminals have never been able to treat their victims with decency. Unfortunately, that is the nature of a criminal. The only hope of teaching them decency is to be an example. Difficult to swallow, but that is true.
