Voter ID could stop nearly 1 in 6 Pa. Latinos from voting

Full story: www.philly.com

AS MANY AS 52,000 of Pennsylvania's 323,000 eligible Latino voters could be stopped from voting on Election Day if the state's new voter-ID law isn't blocked, a Washington-based civil-rights organization said Monday.

The Advancement Project, which released a report Monday on the potential disenfranchisement of Latino voters nationwide, is one of several groups challenging the voter-ID law in state court.

If an ID is needed to receive government assistance, then an ID is needed to vote.

If an ID is needed to purchase liquor and cigarettes then an ID is needed to vote.

If an ID is needed to purchase a gun then an ID is needed to vote.

If an ID is needed to cash a check then an ID is needed to vote.

It's not that hard to obtain a picture I.D.,if some can't figure out a way to get one, they don't need to vote.

The truth is no one will be turned away at the poll. A person can vote if they don't have their identification with them. Then they have some time to provide it. If you can't get to PENDOT to get your ID the state will get you there. If your in such a situation let the state know. People must take responsibility for themselves and what they need.

Well DUH!!!

Preventing minorities from voting in this election is the INTENT of these voter ID laws.

Republicans know the ONLY chance Romney has to win Pennsylvania is if they can keep the 500,000 people with photo ID from voting.

The head of the GOP in Pennsylvania is ON TAPE admitting that very fact.

So issue a photo ID to every citizen. Once that has been done, THEN you can require it be shown to vote.

Considering there are about 500,000 citizens in Pennsylvania without photo ids, and considering Pennslyvania has only issued 10,000 of the new ids so far, they should be ready by the 2062 election.......

What does having access to a photo ID have to do with being an ethnic minority? Any U.S. citizen can apply for an ID.

No, preventing the 14-25 Million "ILLEGALS" from voting, is the INTENT!!!

If the laws only stop 100,000 "ILLEGALS" from voting, that is 100,000 CITIZENS VOTES, that are not cancelled out by 100,000 "ILLEGAL" VOTE!!!!

See Post #4. Not sure what else the State needs to do since they are willing to come to you to get you your FREE ID.(Mine cost $25 'cause I had to renew)

The simple fact is the majority of those citizens who currently lack a state-approved photo ID are minorities.

Regardless of the INTENT of the law (which is very suspect), if the EFFECT of the law is that minorities are disproportionately affected, then it is suspect under the Voting Rights Act.

See, that what happens when there is a looooooong history of violating the voting rights of minorities in this country. Now even a rather sensible law such as showing an ID to prove who you are before voting is automatically suspect. Especially when there is ZERO evidence of widespread voter fraud.

So 1 out of 6 latinos who didn't have proper ID voted the last election? Who knows whether they were legal or not. At least now any latinos who don't have proper ID won't be voting and that will includes all the illegal azzed latinos who voted illegally last time.
Then offer PROOF of all those "illegals" voting?

Many whites & blacks don't have state approved photo IDs either; are they all illegals as well? Or do you only assume someone is illegal if they're hispanic?

Again, show PROOF any illegals voted last time.

Well whatever they're doing obviously isn't enough, since they still have 490,000 IDs to go before everyone in the state has an ID.

Of course since the GOP controls the state, and the majority of those without IDs normally vote for the Dems, the state has no incentive to do more.

Noticed in all these states with voter ID laws it's only the DEMS who are reaching out to ensure EVERYONE can vote who wants to. The GOPasaurs just pass these laws and then sit back hoping it will prevent enough minorities from voting that their candidates win.

I've had to produce picture ID everytime I've voted. What is the big deal? I've had to do the same when I purchase something with my credit card, when I've applied for a loan, when a cop pulls me over, when I go to pick up my son from school, etc. Do I see any of this as racist? No. I see it as a matter of security and I'm grateful that such measures are in place. The only people griping about it, as far as i can see, are those who have something to hide.
