Iowa lawmakers need to be careful with this. It will cost the state dearly and all the gay couples they have married, they would need to legally dissolve their marriages and then proceed to divide assets and other things. In the end, the state may not be able to do this.

Maybe when they're done destroying gay families, then the legislature can go after blacks, hispanics, muslims, jews and all other non christians. Oh and don't forget the Asians.
That should make things better for them.

Wouldn't this lead to a similar muddle as is currently being experienced in California? And aren't they aware of it?

Prop 8, anyone? I guess watching California try to put toothpaste back in a tube means nothing to them.

Just like here in California........the marriages already legal......CAN'T BE DISSOLVED OR UNDONE!!!!

Another Prop 8 type situation will be coming to Iowa IF this occurs......but this WILL NEVER get a vote on the Senate floor......so, this issue by the House Republicans is just for show and nothing more this session!!!!

And did you all notice how the haters and bigots like humberto have nothing better to do than judge the comments on a QUEER board with nasties? Must be so lonely in those closets.... and for those of you bigots who think you are Chtistian... "Judge not lest ye be judged". So not sure what you are other than hypocrites.

I've always thought of Iowa as a fairly progressive place. Certainly not a bigoted backwater.... But after the last election my faith in the state was shaken. This dumbass proposal shakes it further.
I attended a meeting in my small Iowa town a couple of weeks ago in which our state and federal reps and the local business folks met for coffee. This is a staunchly Republican area so they were all Republicans. The entire conversation focused on our "Kenyan" president, the fact that there are too many people of color in the state and oh yeah that pesky equal marriage thingy. Never a word about jobs, the economy, schools, roads nothing! It was way way over the top! Like a comedy skit. These folks are leaders and they rant like drunken rednecks. They were as crazy as Michelle Bachman and as bigoted as Rush.
These boobs couldn't lead a conga line.

“Drop the pretense that this is about anything other than prejudice. Get up on the House floor, say ‘I hate fags,’ and sit back down. It’ll save us all time and it’ll be more honest.”

John Deeth, political blogger for the Des Moines Register (article posted earlier on this Topix board).

This comment is so right on. I really don't care what words they use. This is their message.

California........Iowa, two different states. Iowa could set an ugly precedent and retroact the law. It would not surprise me at all if they did this.

Here's hoping, but they did stop the marriages in California and managed to have equality reversed in Maine, so what is so special about Iowa?

That would be a tough life, being gay...all that constant whining and playing the victim.

Based on an estimate of 3% of Iowans being adult homosexuals, more than 98% of Iowa homosexuals have rejected 'marriage' as an actual practice, per statistics in the Des Moines Register.

Homosexual 'marriage' is a cruel lie with no real basis in homosexual life. It has even been disappointing as a political charade.

Sorry Steven.......Iowa CAN'T RETRACT.......different States: YES, but the Court of both states have already ruled Marriage is a right........if they do get this done.......we will see another Prop 8 type of lawsuit!!!

Besides, the Democratic Leader WON'T let this come to a vote on the Senate floor.

Yes, stop the marriages from taking place for the moment......however THEY WERE NOT ABLE TO INVALIDATE OR NULLIFY THE EXISTING 18,000 MARRIAGES!!!

Since when? Iowa can't retract? Really. Name the counties or major cities in Iowa. You can start naming them and I would not even know about them. Yeah, there is Davenport, Des Moines (sounds real gay), Council Bluffs (which sounds like a gay porno) and that is about it...... With a state surrounded so much farm land and religionists, you do not think they will divorce all those gays and overturn their marriage? Certainly...... and there is not a single KKK member in Alabama......
