ancient Hawaiians had slaves and used human sacrifices. That is not generaklly told because it bothers nativists who never like to hear a word of truth or criticism about the horrid conditions before Cooke.
Folks generaklly don't like to hear negative stuff, but, again, anyone who can read or listen to oral history knows about---what did you call it? "Human sacrifice?" else what were those luakini heiau about? uh, his name was Cook, Captain James....finally, what's this got to do with the Civil War?!?

It's too bad that the whitests (as opposed to the nativists) think it's their kuleana to narrate someone else's history, and this without a knowledge of basic facts, a command of language, or in this case access to spell check....

I had no idea that Hawaii was involved in The War Between the States. If you Hawaiians ever get a chance. Visit the Vicksburg National Military Park in Vicksburg, Mississippi.
The National Civil War Museum in Harrisburg, PA was very impressive. Will have to check out the one in Vicksburg one day.

I was warned about the "Alice Effect" by a Topix moderator. It's a kind of black hole in which the event horizon's increasingly powerful gravitational field strips all subjects of logic andf fact, leaving only free hydrogen molecules and dust bunnies.

I wrote my Master's Thesis about the impact of the Civil War on Hawaii. If anyone wants a copy I can email it. [email protected]

Diplomatically, Economically, Socially, nothing has been published. However, there are a number of recent good books (since my thesis) out about the CSS Shenandoah which destroyed 37 Union ships and 1 Hawaiian ship in the Pacific! Although, I found no evidence of the Shenandoah coming near the Wailua River.

Fascinating! Born in Honolulu, our family relocated to Maryland in the mid-1950s, where I developed an interest in the Civil War, & visited many of the battlefields. It remains an interest of mine, but it just never occurred to me that there was much to know about Hawaii's involvement in the great conflict. This adds a new facet - many thanks to Edna Ellis for her efforts.
This is my great grandma :) and I still hang out with her to learn culture
