It's Fall Festival time in Georgia

The leaves are slowly turning light red from green. It's a sunny day with a breeze in the air and the aweful humidity has lifted.

We have a huge acorn crop this Fall and squirrels are nuttier than usual about nuts. Maybe winter will be colder and/or longer this year.
The squirrels here are building nests about halfway up the trees. Last year they built them higher. According to what my Dad taught me, this means our winter will be colder than last year.

I remember eating squirrels my father had killed and cooked. I remember they tasted good. But I cannot eat anything when I have watched its head get cut off. I guess if I were hungry enough I could -- maybe.

I personally am not a fan of squirrel, though my dad was. I used to go with him when he went squirrel hunting (or most any other place he'd let me tag along!). Mom would cook squirrel for my dad and brother and make something else for all us girls.

I can't even eat fish for several days after I clean them.

You are supposed to eat them while they are fresh.

I am guessing 2/3 squirrel per serving, but guess that depends on how many nuts they ate.

I put them in water and freeze them until I'm ready for them. I can't make myself eat them right after cleaning them.

I understand. Woody Allen said, "I don't mind dying. I just don't want to be there when it happens." That is how I feel. I want my kills to be at least once removed and I don't want to be there when they happen. I worked at the Atlanta Humane Society for years, and the guy whose job it was to euthanize came to work drunk every day. No one begrudged him that altered state. I can still see Joe's eyes in my mind. A decade later people still don't spay and neuter their pets and they still die by the thousands in shelters every day or starve as strays. Opps, you wanted a light topix and I keep falling thru the thin ice.

No, I wanted a place where people didn't slash each other to death with stupid attempts at insult.

This is a perfectly valid subject.

I can't even think about the number of animals killed for no reason. They are not even used as food, which makes it a double tragedy. They are just allowed to breed uncontrolled and then left to starve. If there is such a thing as sin, this is part of it. It's like leaving a one-month old human child out in the woods alone to survive on its own.

I have to turn the channel when the ASPCA and Humane Society commercials come on. I just can't fathom how someone can neglect or hurt an animal that only asks for food and love and gives so much love in return. And yes, I do put my money where my mouth is and donate.

The HSUS is a hugely wealthy not-for-profit marketing and fund raising corporation. They give some grants they can use in advertising and to maintain their status. They do not directly help any animals or provide any support for private or county animal shelters. The ASPCA collects more nuts each year than squirrels do. Our proud country kills and disposes of six million discarded pets each year .. our annual holocaust. If you want to help animals, pressure the county to begin to enforce some laws and ordinances. We could start with enforcing the state law that requires dog and cats be vaccinated for rabies every year.

Please do not judge all Southerners by the ones who inhabit Topix. It's like comparing all Christians to the religious nuts on Topix.

We are a diverse community of people, many of whom are well-educated and unbiased, not prejudiced and fairly nice folk with whom to have a conversation.

Fair enough. You should move to California, we welcome people like you. The weather's nice and it's going to snow tomorrow in the mountains 90 minutes from LA.
Please look the other way while I address the lesser folks.
Thank you for the invitation. I have not yet been to California, but it's on my list. But first, I'm going back to Sedona. It's quirky, but one of the most beautiful places I've ever been. I'd truly like to see parts of California, Washington and Oregon.
