Ga's retired Four Star General William J. Livsey ---Mother Died,Saturday at 98 years old

Erma Brand Livsey, age 98, of Grayson, GA formerly of Clarkston, GA died Friday, July 25, 2008.

She is survived by two sons, William(Bill) J. Livsey of Fayetteville and his wife Bena, Jack Livsey of Grayson and his wife Mary Helen, sisters, Margaret Hayne of Jacksonville, FL., Dorothy Lee of Columbus and Rebecca Appling of Alpharetta, GA, nine grandchildren, sixteen great-grandchildren, four great great-grandchildren, and nieces and nephews.

A Service Celebrating the Life of Erma Brand Livsey will be held Tuesday, July 29, 2008 at Tom M. Wages Snellville Chapel at 11:00AM with Rev. Jimmy Wilson officiating. Interment will follow at Mellwood Cemetery.

General William James Livsey is a native of Clarkston, Georgia. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science from North Georgia College in 1952 and was commissioned a Second Lieutenant of Infantry in the Regular Army. He has a Masters degree in Psychology from Vanderbilt University.

His military schooling includes the Infantry Officer Basic and Advanced Courses, the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College where he graduated first in his class, the Armed Forces Staff College, and the Army War College.

General Livsey served over 35 years as an active commissioned officer. He fought in two wars with valorous distinction. He held every level of command position from Platoon Leader to Commanding General of two Field Armies. He had six overseas tours including three in Korea, one in Vietnam, and two in Europe.

In May, 1984, and until his retirement June 30,1987, General Livsey served as Commander-in-Chief, United Nations Command/Commander-in-Chief Combined Forces Command/ Commander, United States Forces, Korea/Commanding General Eighth United States Army.

General Livsey's awards and decorations include the Defense Distinguished Service Medal, Distinguished Service Medal (with Oak Leaf Cluster), Silver Star, Legion of Merit (with 3 Oak Leaf Clusters), Distinguished Flying Cross, Bronze Star Medal with "V" Device, Air Medals, Army Commendation Medal with "V" Device (with 2 Oak Leaf Clusters), Combat Infantryman Badge (2nd Award), Army Staff Identification Badge, and the Parachutist Badge.

General Livsey and his wife, the former Bena Sue Burns, currently reside in Fayetteville, Georgia. They have four sons.

He is our cousin.His great-great-grandfather is Green Livsey who was born in Culpepper,Va.in 1794

I had the honor of being on his personal staff,as his driver in Germany with the 8th ID.I wish he and his lovely wife Bena Sue continued good health and a long life.
