Am I the only one to wonder why there was not a fail-safe button for this machine? Wouldn't it have made sense to have some remote way to blow it up? Or something that would self-destruct if taken apart or something like that? It's pitiful that America is going on bended knee to say "Please, Sir, will your please give me back my very expensive drone? Pretty Please?"

@PNGreen, "It's pitiful that America is going on bended knee to say "Please, Sir, will your please give me back my very expensive drone? " Was it any more "pitiful" than President Eisenhower having to go on "bended knee' and ask the Russians to return Gary Powers and the super-secret US spy plane U-2 shot down over Russian territory?

@PNGreen, "Wouldn't it have made sense to have some remote way to blow it up?" Since you or anyone else don't know for sure exactly what the Iranians captured from the downing of the American 'super-secret spy drone', keep an open mind on what it means. Like in the Francis Gary Powers U-2 downing incident during the Eisenhower Administration, the spy drone story may be a test case that the Obama Administration planned for Iran. The Americans wanted to know more about Iranian missile defense capabilities and also how willing Iran might be in cooperating with Americans on nuclear non-proliferation and regional , middle east stability issues in exchange for lifting some of the embargo and sanctions on Iran's nuclear energy industry.

I had the same reaction. When I heard of the demand, I thought the request was so lame and embarrassing that I really kinda thought that something must'a been lost in translation since NOBODY thinks that there's a snowball's chance in hell that they would return it upon our demand.

So I went to check and reviewed a short clip of the CBS report that runs the tape of Obama asking for its return and supposedly shows a picture of it in Iranian hands. It actually looks to me like Obama is trying to keep from laughing as he requests the return. btw- If the footage is real-- so much for the theory I heard that it must'a been fairly completely destroyed in the crash after a high altitude malfunction.(The very short CBS report is at the link below).

In any case, the whole thing makes us look completely incompetent. I hope something more sensible is going on than is apparent so far.

From what I have heard drones are supposed to crash land if there is a problem, and then it would burn from its own fuel. No explosives would be carried on board for self-destruct, ordinance would be a problem every time it landed, they would need to remove for service and refueling, and they would be a risk if the drone came down damaged or was having control problems that is why the plan is to crash it. Something must have gone wrong or the control was compromised, hacked. When it was evident it went wrong, a cruise missile should have been launched immediately to take it out, follow it to the ground. This is a huge compromise of our secrets and Obama let it happen.

@exitde, "This is a huge compromise of our secrets and Obama let it happen." Not necessarily. It does show by the reaction of the Iranians that they are baffled by what to do with it, don't have a clue how to use it, and more than likely will ask their Chinese ally to take a look at it. It won't be much of a surprise to the Chinese since the Bush Administration had already share the crucial technology with them in exchange for lucrative loan and trade guarantees.

The Chinese will be even more baffled. Obama had the responsibility to order it destroyed, again he failed to perform. Hey, if he wants to play with the big dogs, he needs to come off the porch. If he has the nerve to be flying something like that drone in any airspace, then he needs the nerve to retrieve it or destroy it if things go wrong.

ExitDE,
For God's sake no matter what the man did, it wouldn't make you happy. You just plain hate his guts. No matter what he does, he can't win with you all. The only solution is for him to ignore people who just plain hate him and go out and win the election. From what I can see it's 4 more years. The Repubs don't have a electable candidate.

I don't hate Obama, actually he seems like a nice man personally. However, his policies and ideology are way off target. That is what I don't like and disagree with, he is harming this country. He does not get it, he does not listen to the American people, he continues to shove his liberal / socialist garbage down our throats. You don't have to worry about who runs, everyday more and more people are gravitating towards anyone but Obama. Look around, this country was in trouble when he came into office, so far he managed to not only continue to drive into a ditch, he went off the cliff. Next time around the American people will elect a leader, not a slogan.

ExTide,
Which of the Repubs do you think has a chance running against Obama? If you look with an unbiased eye, I don't think anyone of them is electable. Seems like the Repubs have swung so far right, and the TP has too much influence . In my opinion, they are out of step with the American People.

@exitde, "Obama had the responsibility to order it destroyed, again he failed to perform." I'm just glad that President Obama did not take Cheney's advice to attack Iran's sovereign territory. Obama acted rightly in the drone issue because it would have been criminally insane to risk a war with Iran over one downed spy drone. Didn't we learn from the foolhardy Bush/Cheney rush to judgement and invasion of Iraq that embroiled us in eight years of a war that we never needed to fight? I expect that a few low level neoconservative Pentagon bureaucrats (left-overs from the hawkish Bush/Cheney days, like Robert Gates authorized the spy mission in hopes of pressuring President Obama to take a harder ,pro-Israeli stand towards Iran. Luckily, cooler, moderate, more pragmatic heads prevailed in President Obama to use the more useful tools of diplomacy for getting our property back.
