Other that the obvious, the possibility of fewer union members, what are they really afraid of? IF unionization is as good for the worker as they think it is, then even in a Right to Work state, people would want to join a union, right? OR - it is the knowledge that unions only harm job creation and are an inpediment to expansion of business?

I was a part of a good discussion of this at a recent dinner party-- and many there were teachers! It was such a welcome reminder that great discussions can occur even where opinions diverge!! As I recall, it was sparked by some news item (that escapes me at the minute) about some employees that refused union overtures.

Anyway, the "debate" dealt with the proposition that unions have achieved labor advances that the non-union workers get the benefit of and thus "mistakenly" feel that they don't need the "protection" of unions.(I'm only using quotes to signal that I understand these terms will be fairly seen differently by those holding different views.)

I actually see some merit on each side. I think there are some times and places for organized labor but (as I mentioned in an earlier post on a different thread) the risk is that the original purposes become lost as the entrenched advocates lose sight of the greater good-- as happened in the auto industry where the unions' refusal to face the international economic realities dang near brought the industry to an irretrievable demise.
