DeWayne Wickham: Portman picks son over politics
Rob Portman's conversion on same-sex marriage, my first reaction was to declare an ideological victory for the political left and wrap him in the same arm's-length embrace the British gave Benedict Arnold.

I applaud Portman's conversion however it still bothers me that he only changed his opinion when it affected one of his own.
If you can't empathize with people who aren't in your circle then how can you possibly be an effective leader or a decent human being.
It didn't matter that he was hurting gay people UNTIL it was his own son that was being hurt.
That's motivated self-interest not altruistic empathy.

Well, he IS a Republican, after all. Isn't motivated self-interest part of their national platform? Altruistic empathy is for demmycrats.

I do not praise him for this. He waited two years, and AFTER a presidential election to come forward. Why? Also, in his remarks he said that he changed his mind because he wanted his son to have the same chance at love as he has had. Not that he wanted it for all LGBT. He only mentioned his son. That was and is his ONLY motivation. Empathy for those he considers "other" is totally missing.
