Bill On Open Alcohol Containers In Vehicles Seems Dead

In the state Senate, it seemed like a no-brainer last week that a driver in the year 2008 should not be able to bolt down the highway with an open bottle of whiskey in his hand.

We have a deficit, gas is $4 a gallon, median housing prices are down, the infrastructure of this state is falling apart. Yet we debate this and worry about profiling as a result.....

In November we need to set the tone where every single incumbent is removed from office. I personally have had it with arrogant stupid politicians. ITS TIME FOR CHANGE AND TO SEND A MESSAGE.

What a disgrace. We need term limits. There should be no open alcohol containers in ay motor vehicle by anyone.

Because driving under the influence isn't against the law?

Because a driver drinking while driving isn't illegal enough?

Because a driver should be arrested if someone in his back seat decides to open a 1oz shot bottle they had in their pocket?

Because no one ever has any reason to transport bottles of liquor that have already been opened?

It is not still legal for a driver to drink and drive, only passengers.

Why shouldn't the passenger be allows to drink a beer? Why shouldn't you have the RIGHT to drink on the way to the bar instead of spending $5 a beer.
Heck, even if the driver drinks - he's not going to be drunk until the he gets to his destination.
I had no idea this type of thing was even legal.
Who could blame you for not knowing it was legal? This being CT, the fascist, nanny, no-fun-allowed state, I always assume EVERYTHING is illegal.

"...with members of the Black and Latino Caucus charging that a bill banning open containers of alcohol in cars would give police another reason to pull over minority drivers."

Wow, are they not supposed to be stopped if they are violating the law?

The racial profile law passed in 2000 revealed police are targeting white males between the ages of 18-26. Those who demanded the stats be compiled didn't like the results so they managed to force that the stats continue to be compiled. The irony is that it causes motorists to be detainied longer than necessary.

Amazing.

This bears repeating - the first line of this article shows a distinct bias in favor of the ban and gives the impression that it is legal for drivers to be drinking while driving. Poor writing on the Courant's part.

Lord forbid we discriminate against minorities by banning open alcohol containers in motor vehicles! Maybe we should rethink restrictions on excessively loud music and firing weapons from moving vehicles too!

Check the package stores that are closest to highway access around the LOB during evening hours, many many legislative plates. After a long day's session are we really going to deny the state legislators their half-pint on the way south?

Your message is spot on, but I fear there are to few Americans left in Connecticut, and in fact America, to restore good, honest, and resposible government. Voting out ALL incumbents would be the first necessary step.
Oh please

Why is just about everything these days a matter of "racial profiling" and minoritys?? I thought this bill was about keeping alcohol secured in a moving vehicle?? Doesn' anybody care about drunk or drinking drivers these days??

I live across the street from a package store. On Thursday and Friday afternoons/evenings the parkin lot is loaded with vans full of "minority" field workers who drink in the parking lot, in their cars and probably have open containers with them as they are driving away. The police do nothing about it unless it gets out of hand. Some evenings it is pretty raucous! I see no racial profiling here! As a matter of fact, the whole thing is pretty much ignored. Maybe because the liquor store owner himself is a minority?? But then that goes against the current theory that everyone is out to get the minorities. Give it a rest and get on with making "law"...that's why you were voted into office to begin with!

This bill would have been useless anyways. It is already against the law for a driver to be drinking. So what if a passenger drinks? People will be getting pulled over for drinking soda which, by the way, a driver should not be doing anyway because it is a distraction right? You could drop some hot coffee in your lap and spill it when you hit the tree.

4-1/2 hours? How much did the deficit grow in that time?
Of those 43 states with open container laws how many have greenhouse gas emission limits?
More studies are needed here. Lets work on how we can get this new study funded.

And, I bet that 10 out of 10 times, the car was pulled over because it violated some law.

Is the black and hispanic community saying that, because their kind breaks the law more, they are being picked on by the cops?

I will bet anyone a dollar that, if I drove like an idiot on the Berlin Turnpike, I too would get a ticket!
