Thank you Governor Rell! We had to wait for one year of residency in Connecticut before becoming eligible for in state rates, and we paid a lot of income taxes, and broke NO laws!

It's the ILLEGALS that do not deserve any special treatment. They should be jailed and deported.

Our colleges can only handle a limited number of students. All openings for students in our colleges should be reserved for U.S. citizens and legal immigrants. Illegal aliens should not be in our colleges in any event, regardless of their ability to pay, much less getting in-state rates. Rell took the correct action.

This is horrible for children who were FORCED to come to this country with no say in the matter.
Yes, I disagree with their parents for coming here illegally, however why should you blame these innocent children who now will get no education?
It's a shame. Rell needs to go.

For perhaps the very first time I am in complete agreement with Gov. Rell. This and other such legislation (good intentions or not) side-steps one significant consideration: these people are illegal and should have no standing when applying for assistance, of any kind. I am amazed they are permitted to attend any schooling, period. Donald Williams suggests these people should be granted "special" consideration because they habve "made a commitment to the state". Would that include selectively abiding by our laws. When and how do we express the laws that seriously need to be followed? Where is the logic and sanity in all of this? Should we develop a special means to enable voting while maintaining their illegal status? How can they be given benefits and priviledges beyond our own citizens? Please do not consider this as a left or right issue, or one of sensitivity or compassion. This is about the rule of law and our reluctance or inability to apply the them fully and the need to secure our borders, as required. Short of this, eliminate the borders entirely and entertain a calamity of biblical proportions.

What is the first word in the phrase "illegal immigrant." Many Americans don't respect our own laws, how can we expect anyone else to?

Finally someone stood up and took a stand on this out of control matter. Way to go Governor!! What about the word ILLEGAL do people not understand? Vanred I am coming to broad brook to borrow your police cars and firetrucks for our town's use. Oh wait! You paid for them with YOUR taxes? We can't use them. No free hand outs of your town's resources? Then why the heck should the state subsidize illegal immigrant's tuition? I am not racist, sexist nor do I enjoy keeping people down, but I do believe in playing by the rules. The illegals need to stop and the people putting them to work illegally need to be put in their place as well. That is a small part of how you break the cycle.

Why are we being forced to feed, cloth and provide tuition for someone who keeps having kids and is not legal in this country? You think every little Italian, Irish, Polish etc kid coming over in the 19th and early 20th century had a choice? Grow up and stop the welfare. They should become a citizen, get a job and education. <gee> That's how we all did it!

Why do people even use the word immigrant -- phrase like "Undocumented" come from people (on both sides of the political spectrum) who view Animal Farm as a manual rather then warning.
The accurate description is Illegal Alien, since they are Aliens, and are in the nation Illegally. If you're in a country against it's laws, there is no reason to expect such status should be permenant so they're not immigrants by definition.
While you empathize with the children, tough. By granting social welfare benefits and resident rates to their families, you're encouraging the law breaking behaviors by both them and their parents.
We need to reform our immigration system. We need a system to allow lawful, large scale immigration. If you're in good health, can demonstrate a working competency in English, and can pass a background check...here's your work permit.
That doesn't mean we have to tolerate or support those who've come illegally, and you don't have to bus 12,000,000 home. Start cracking down on the employers progressively more and more while simulataneously expanding the channels for legal migration. Those here illegally can go home, and apply to re-enter on legal terms.
It's not rocket science -- it's called being strict and rational, not emotional and pandering.

There is nothing illegal about being a child who was forced to come here and now thanks to Jodi Rell will not get an education.

Agree with Dogma. I'm far to the left of Rell on most issues, but this was the right thing to do. Why should we reward and encourage illegal immigration? We can't and don't take care of the people who are already here, working legally THANK YOU JODY!
