Relocoted to Mass from Ct.in March of 98...Recently received a collections notice a company representing the municipality from where I formally resided. They are attempting to extort a fairly large from me for unpaid Ct. vehicle property taxes for the years 97 & 98. Although the 97 tx was paid I can't prove it because any documentation associated with with this transaction has long since disappeared. I feel that they know this and are probably just trying to smoke me out to get a reaction out of me and start the clock ticking again. Apparently it took these people 15 years to locate me. Not sure why. Inspite leaving a fowarding address the municipality in question never fowarded a bill to my new address in Mass. My credit rating has remained unblemished so I would have no indication from any of reporting agencies that there was a problem. The collections people know & understand that there is a 15 year statute on limitations on such matters & therefore sat on this thing for close to 15 years in order to max out the interest, penalties & fees. Has anyone else had an experience similar to this ? Do I dare respond to this attempt at a legal shakedown? Do I ignore it completely ? Do I attempt to negotiate a mutually agreeable settlement ? Do I let the statute of limitations run it's course and just play out the string or just pay it in full to get rid of them once & for all ? All suggestions welcome ! Commando
