The House and Senate will return from their August recess next week. Will they choose the House enforcement-only bill, or the Senate amnesty bill that the Congressional Budget Office says will cost taxpayers $50 billion of extra welfare?

Antonia Alvarez of Minneapolis doesn't consider herself to be part of the immigration problem or a burden to the state.

"I am a productive person. I pay taxes and am an active member of the community," said Alvarez, 35, who is a supervisor at a clothing store. "I don't ask the government for clothing and food handouts."

The single mother of three teenagers and an infant was one of six people who spoke at a news conference on Sunday to challenge Gov. Tim Pawlenty's recent report that said the public cost of illegal immigration in Minnesota is as much as $188 million. About 200 people attended the news conference at San Miguel Middle School in Minneapolis.

The report doesn't show the economic benefits that immigrants bring to the communities, said Jared Erdmann, the interim co-director of the Hispanic Advocacy and Community Empowerment through Research.

He wants to see the state recognize the economic impact of immigrant workers who contribute to the state's service, construction and agriculture industries.

Jim Wilson of Wilson's Nursery Inc. in Chanhassen employs mostly Hispanic workers. "They're the lifeblood of our company," which he said had revenues of $2 million last year.

Latino buying power in Minnesota was $3.3 billion in 2005, about 2 percent of Minnesota's total, according to information presented at the news conference from the Selig Center for Economic Growth at the University of Georgia.

A Department of Corrections report indicated that about 8,000 illegal immigrants filed state income taxes. Although the state is estimated to have as many as 85,000 undocumented workers, many don't file taxes, but taxes from paychecks remain with the state.

Many in the group hope to get an audience with Pawlenty to discuss the social and economic contributions that immigrants bring to Minnesota. Sister Gabriel Herbers, 85, of the Sisters of the Good Shepherd in Shoreview wants the governor to clarify where the information in his report came from and clarify differences between documented and undocumented immigrants.

Mark Lindberg is a member of Isaiah, a faith-based organization of 80 churches, synagogues and mosques that promotes civil rights. "Minnesotans have a choice whether we will welcome and respect or exclude and punish," he said.

Dirty Little Secret of Illegal Immigration:$7 Billion a Year Paid by Illegals to Social Security

I recently had the privilege of hearing Luis Moises Escalante speak at my church. Mr. Escalante is an official of Interfaith Coalition for Immigrant Rights, and he was a US immigrant two decades ago.

Among the thirty who attended Mr. Escalante's presentation were many who loudly disagreed with his ideas. In fact, they came fully prepared to disagree. And to not listen.

Frankly, as a lifelong resident of California, my home state, I fully understand people chafing at the resultant overcrowding in schools, hospital emergency rooms and local court rooms. Southern Californians are inundated with negative messages about the influx of illegal immigrants....the inconvenience, the economic loss and the broad-brush ethnic stereotypes of immigration. Unlike many liberals, I understand the local anger.

But the anger is misdirected at poverty-stricken, starving immigrant families who have been exploited for 20 years by US businesses, victimized by Mexican privatization of various industries, and milked by the US government hungry for billions in Social Security and Medicare contributions from undocumented workers....workers who will never receive benefits from those systems.

Information that Mr. Escalante provided, plus my own research and reading, revealed a scenario that shocked me. I wrote about it in an article, "Illegal Immigration Explained - Profits & Poverty, Social Security & Starvation."

Here are just a few of the facts....

-- Did you know that, in just 2004, undocumented workers illegally hired by US businesses contributed $7 billion to Social Security and $1.5 billion to Medicare? And yet, virtually none of the illegal workers will ever receive benefits back from these federal programs? Not one penny.

-- Did you know that all Social Security Administration projections and budgets include, and rely heavily on, billions in annual contributions from undocumented immigrant workers? That Social Security would have a significant solvency problem without that revenue?

-- Did you know that, in 1999 under President Bill Clinton, the US government collected $3.69 million in fines from 890 companies for employing undocumented workers....and in 2004, under President George Bush, the US collected only $188,500 from 64 companies for such illegal employment practices? And that NO fines were levied at all in pre-election 2004?

This is BS--those taxes go to a pooled fund in WA, and the politicians get to spend it anyway they want since there is no SSN to match it to.
