U.S. slams China in Edward Snowden case as mystery swirls

The seat Edward Snowden had booked in Row 17 was empty when Aeroflot Flight SU150 roared down the runway in Moscow on Monday, leaving a tail wind of mystery about the location of America's most famous fugitive and deepening White House frustration as his embarrassing escapades chilled U.S. relations with China and Russia.

At the White House, Press Secretary Jay Carney accused China of willfully violating an international extradition pact by permitting Snowden to board a flight in Hong Kong and fly to Moscow on Sunday. He said Chinese authorities knew Snowden faced federal espionage charges for disclosing U.S. intelligence programs that secretly collect domestic telephone logs and spy on foreigners' Internet traffic.

-

Carney was less harsh on Russia, praising its help in the investigation of one of the men who purportedly bombed the Boston Marathon on April 15. But Carney said "it is our assumption" that Snowden is still in Russia and that President Vladimir Putin's government has an obligation to turn him over to U.S. authorities.

"We do expect the Russian government to look at all the options available to expel Mr. Snowden back to the United States," Carney said.

The Obama administration had asked Hong Kong police to arrest the onetime National Security Agency contract worker so they could seek his extradition to face trial. But officials in Hong Kong, which is a special administrative region of China, maintained that they were given "insufficient" evidence and let Snowden board the flight to Moscow.

-

If Russia does not deport Snowden to the United States, he may be headed to Havana the destination he had booked on Monday and then to what apparently is his next goal: political asylum in Ecuador.

Ecuadorean Foreign Minister Ricardo Patino said Snowden had written to President Rafael Correa formally requesting asylum.

Russia's President says former NSA contractor Edward Snowden is still in the transit zone of Moscow's Sheremetyevo Airport. Vladimir Putin says that any accusations of Russia related to Snowden are "nonsense and rubbish."

Speaking to journalists in Finland, Putin said that there is no extradition treaty between Russia and the US. He also said that Snowden did not commit any crime on the territory of Russia.

"Snowden is a free person. The sooner he chooses his final destination, the better it is for him and Russia," Putin said.

If he were Russian or Chinese intelligence Washington would have been first to offer him asylum. Such obvious double standards.

Obama probably has unmanned drones targeting him already.

This looks a lot like the plot of the movie "The Terminal" with Tom Hanks, but in reverse :)

I'm curious about his choice of that particular location for his current hang-out - and whether it carries some message in itself, was it the Tom Hanks movie, or was it the famous scene from the Modern Warfare 2 video game, or just some other smart twist... Reportedly he had checked in for his flight to Cuba twice but then failed to board it. Again if that was so - what exactly changed his mind.

Must be cool to know that the whole world is looking for you, everyone knows where you are, and nobody can catch you - while you can follow the whole process on the internet from your hotel at Moscow transit lounge...

At this point his initial message is being lost around all the drama that is being built up around his persona, so I can't claim to understand his real intentions. It's time for him to speak out again and make his intentions clear to everyone. Perhaps he's starting to realize he's not up to the task he signed up for.

On second thought, perhaps he intends to stay there a long time. The main reason - security. Airport transit lounge is probably the best place to minimize assassination attempts because all people are screened for weapons, also nobody can just get in or get without documents being checked by security - likely it's the safest place on Earth for him now, even better than Ecuador and Cuba.

Assange stands by Edward Snowden as Ecuador's Correa reprimands consul

WikiLeaks founder says 'there is no stopping the publishing process' as NSA leaker remains stuck in Moscow airport

http://www.guardian.co.uk/media/2013/jun/30/a...

Snowden is believed to be holed up in the transit area of a Moscow airport, as he seeks asylum in another country, possibly Ecuador.

WikiLeaks has been assisting Snowden in his attempt to avoid capture, providing the 30-year-old with travel expenses and legal counsel and sending advisers to accompany him on his journey from Hong Kong to Moscow earlier this month.

But WikiLeaks has come under criticism from Snowden's father, Lonnie Snowden, who through his lawyer has accused the anti-secrecy organization of using his son to raise money for itself and to prevent Edward Snowden "from doing the right thing" by returning to the US to face charges. Assange told This Week that he had contacted the lawyer to try to "put some of his concerns to rest".

Snowden's predicament, trapped in a legal no man's land between countries, shows no sign of any early resolution. The US government has revoked his passport, making it almost impossible for him to travel on from Russia to any possible final destination. Countries such as Iceland, which Snowden has mentioned as a desired potential safe haven, have made clear that he has to be on their soil before he can claim asylum, creating a legal Catch-22.

The Ecuadorean president, Rafael Correa, told the Associated Press on Sunday that Snowden was "in the care of the Russian authorities" and would not be able to leave Moscow's international airport without his US passport. In a comment that indicated the cautious response of Ecuador to the case, Correa reprimanded Ecuador's consul for issuing Snowden with a letter of safe passage that he is believed to have used to travel from Hong Kong to Russia.

To have done that without consulting the central Ecuadorean government was a "serious error", Correa said. In comments that will not encourage Snowden or his supporters, the Ecuadorean leader added that if Snowden had broken US laws he would have to assume responsibility, adding that the case was "not in Ecuador's hands".
