The "ugly debate" about the issue of the border is not heard by the Mexicans.
(Not by Mexicans like me, anyway).
That is internal politics inside the USA.
What we hear is the coming of trade deals and diplomacy, for example this visit of Gov. Brown.
By the way, the "ugly debate" and the bad propaganda against Mexico is not exclusive from the USA.
In Spanish media, distortion and propaganda about us is about as bad. Basically they buy all US conservative anti-mexican propaganda and add a bit of their own prejudices. That is not bad, because young Spaniards are fleeing their country in droves, and due to this propaganda, most that cross the Atlantic land in Argentina, Brazil... and even Venezuela and Cuba (believe it or not).
In Venezuela, it is said (in rumors and "informal" state media) that we have 400% inflation, people fell from stavation on the streets, that there is no free public education, and we have US Marines occupaing the largest cities.
So you see that many people "love us"... ;-).
But we care about it? Not really. I personally do not care about it.
Anti-Mexican propaganda is very effective, but only inverse-proportional to education of the people it affects.
Investment continues to flow in our country (it has its own logic), people continues to migrate to Mexico, or visit Mexico as tourists (Mexico is the second most visited country in the Western Hemisphere).
And besides, anti-Mexican propaganda only reach North America, parts of South America, and a limited number of countries in Europe.
Asia, for example, is more or less free of anti-Mexican propaganda. Or better said... its people that doesn't care: They prefer to see things through their own eyes.
This bad propaganda against us... even works in our favor: Only the most informed, and therefore, educated and good-willed people continue to come to Mexico and invest in Mexico.
And with that, things go better, at least in that realm.

Mexico isn't the one visiting other countries to prove that is strong and still has allies: is the one being visited by other countries which want to prove they are strong and have allies, like Japan and Israel.
While Canada's Harper was singing for the Israeli leaders the Israeli columnists covered Israel's observer membership to the Pacific Alliance as the evidence that they grow no matter how much their enemies wanted them destroyed.
