CHOMP doctors charge exorbitant fees

The CFO of Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula recently wrote an inflammatory letter to the editor in this paper commenting on the hospital's relationship with Blue Shield. Full Story

CHOMP has a history of engaging in anti-competitive practices. It appears that since they sit on the Peninsula, they believe they can charge anything and people will pay for it -- provided they get a pretty room with a view of some trees.

What about CHOMP's 2 million dollar "loan" to Mee Memorial Hospital? All this is was an attempt to lock up Mee Memorial (who is having significant financial difficulties in servicing a poor population) from entertaining offers from any other health group. In exchange for a "loan" to a hospital desperate for cash, CHOMP has kept other healthcare providers from entering Monterey County. Talk about anti-competitive!!!!

CHOMP is a business for sure. They are the only game in town and they know it. They bill by "line item." They claim that their fees are reasonable. They pay their CEO over $675K per year. nuff said.

I wonder how hard he works, approximately how many hours a day does he put in?

Sad, but true. CHOMP looks like a country club, a familiar setting to many here. My wife died prematurely due to poor care at CHOMP. The CEO on down refused to investigate the nursing error. Quality of care is as much the issue as cost.

The dental profession maintains a similar lock on fees. I have heard dentists brag that they are successful in keeping HMO's and other cost-management strategies off the Monterey Peninsula. Greed, not excellence, drive far too many doctors and dentists here. I guess it is contageous, caught from an Ocean Avenue shop owner, developer or Realtor!

It isn't just CHOMP. Monterey County hospitals SVMH and CHOMP charge rates significantly higher than that of other hospitals - not that other hospitals are reasonable. SVMH CEO Sam Downing, who lives in Carmel, was paid $1.7 million dollars in one year and has a base salary of about $735,000 before other benefits. They have a bunch of good old boys on the board who perform little oversight and they are buying up property like any other greedy corporation. The disgusting part? SVMH is a public district hospital as well as a not for profit entity CHOMP is a non-profit. Anyone can view their financial information at www.guidestar.org .

It is not just hospitals, specialists have become increasingly greedy and they care very little about the patient, in my opinion, and care more about the next porsche, the next vacation house, the next mini-mansion.

Then look at all the med industry sales reps and how much they are making. It is not unusual for a rep with a healthy batch of doctors to make $500,000 a year and for what? They are overpaid car salesman.

Whatever the case may be, the ones who lose in this situation are those of us covered by Blue Shield and are seen at CHOMP. Who wins? The hospital-based doctors, who receive the full fee that they charge Blue Shield patients, and it's the patients who have to pay most of that cost. Thanks, Blue Shield, for standing up for us and ensuring that we on the Monterey Peninsula don't overpay.[end sarcasm]

Tell me why...why should the physicians who have had at least 26 years of education plus continuing education, should bend over and agree to accept fees by an insurance company? The insurance company should reimburse properly. PEOPLE...get real! Why would you side with the insurance company whose CEO makes MILLIONS per year? The physicians work and live on the peninsula...it is expensive. Wake up! Why would you want Blue Shield to profit from the blood sweat and tears of our physicians? I don't! I want them to be happy, wealthy and thrive so they can take care of me and my family. They have earned the right to be wealthy. The insurance companies have not. Blue Shield's letter is full of B.S. and twisted words. Wake up and smell the coffee.

There is greed on both ends. Have you visited an orthodontist lately? Feels more like time-share than health care with all the sales gimmicks.

Cazpitalism run amock has gripped both end of the medicine/dental health care industry in our glitzy little disneyesque communities.

Emergency Room and Hospital: Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula
On arrival you will be automatically diagnosed with a mental disorder. A psychiatrist will may make that decision on pure speculation without even talking to you. You instantly loose all your rights. Patients’ rights don’t apply to mental patients. If you refuse to cooperate, you will may be restrained, denied food and water for days and threatened with additional imprisonment. If you refuse treatment, CHOMP will forcefully drug you, perform unnecessary and invasive procedures in order to maximize their profits. You will be forced to swallow harmful medications with severe side effects or they will be injected into you.
After you get finally released, take a look at your medical file. You will be very surprised. Most of it will be falsified false information. Statements you made will be taken out of context and discussions about treatment options and medication side effects that never occurred will be said to have happened.

CHOMP ER docs and radiologists will not accept federal Blue Shield. They wanted to force federal workers to pay full price to be seen in the ER. As we all know, if you need to hauled off to the ER, you will be taken to CHOMP if you are on the Peninsula. Since most federal employees work in and around Monterey, we have no choice. This year Blue Shield agreed to pay all doctor fees except for $300.00 which we have to pay. The doctors at CHOMP are overpaid in my opinion. The majority of your time in the ER, you being attended to by nursing staff while the doctor breezes in and out, spending maybe 5 minutes tops with the patient and whose physical exam consists of little more than hand patting.

BS Problems

I've just had another round with Blue Shield. According to CHOMP BS is the only insurance company who will not pay the hospital rates. All other insurances do. There is apparently a significant difference in their doctor rates when paid at the "hospital" vs. the doctor office rate. Some federal Blue Shield clients have opted to switch to a comparable choice during open season. It would be good to know the name of Blue Shield's best competitor.
