Yeah...but we can't tell which babies will turn out to be so imbalanced as adults they'd actually be willing to join unions so it wouldn't work.

It's interesting how unions have been so demonized in this country. This is no 'mistake' as it has been a conscious effort by big business for the last few decades. I'd love to see an individual like Dan C transported back to the hell-hole workplaces Americans enjoyed before unions fought for basic and fundamental rights. Unfortunately, he won't have to as the country is headed in that direction again.

No need to. Apparently unlike you I studied business in college. It's not 1925 genius.

During the inception of unions back then they were needed. Employers had sweatshops and other horrible places to work that were often dangerous not to mention horrible working conditions, etc.

Unions have not been needed since the 60's. Modern management learned that by treating employees well meant higher production rates and held other benefits. Unions today onl;y serve as collection points for organized crime and legalized extortion for many union members whom are worthless.

You don't determine your ratge of pay in a free economic system friend. Unions are the primary reason manufacturing went into foreign lands. Unions are one of the primary causes for our weakened state. Unions today are compromised of little bitches who couldn't read a God damned balance sheet let alone know the components of the industry they are in yet they think they can dictate pay by forcing the hand of their employer only to later scratch their heads as to why their own companies suffer in the marketplace.

I worked for a union based company for 26 years. I could outline every aspect of that scum sucking institution as to how they weaken the U.S. economy let alone their own situation as individual employees. Unions are an outdated concept whose only purpose today is to serve as a Marxist ideal in a free country. They're not needed by those who work an honest days living but for those who sitg on their ass all day thinking they're producers when in fact they're about as valuable as paperweights.

Sorry bud.....the unions hold no value in our country any longer.

Unions matter today more than ever.

If we want to rebuild the American middle class, we need strong unions. It’s no coincidence that the decline of the middle class began with the decline in union membership. From one-third to one-fifth of the growth in inequality can be explained by the decline of unions, according to a 2011 study in the American Sociological Review by Bruce Western of Harvard University and Jake Rosenfeld of the University of Washington.

We see the result of this decline every day. More Americans are working in low-wage jobs and are without health care and the means to save for retirement.

Union jobs can still offer workers good salaries, pensions and health care benefits that give families the economic security to send kids to college or trade schools, to invest in their communities and to have a secure retirement. This is not some socialist ideal. It is the American dream — and unions have helped ensure that more Americans have a chance to live it.

Unions also matter if we want to retool and retrain our workforce for the global economy. Employers regularly talk about not being able to find skilled workers. New union training programs are a critical component of the answer to this problem. At their own expense, unions and union contractors provide training and apprenticeship programs that teach the latest construction and building techniques with a focus on safety.

This training allows U.S. workers compete with anyone in the world. These union training programs should be encouraged, and the workers who graduate should be put back to work rebuilding the nation’s infrastructure — and our economy.

More importantly, unions matter because who else will speak on behalf of workers? The U.S. Chamber of Commerce speaks for the interests of business, and AARP speaks for the interests of the elderly. But without unions, who would speak for workers?

Dan C- you are severely misled. The need for unions is more than ever. You can talk all you want about a 'free-market' economic system when no such system has ever existed. It's a complete myth and 'utopian' thinking for the rich. For Capitalism to even survive it needs heavy subsidies from the government; which has been seen in this country time and time again.

There is direct correlation from the decline in income for the US workers and the decline in unionism as Giantone has illustrated. To think that 'upper management' now has the worker's best interests at hand is simply a laughable concept.

The problem is that many unions today are 'soft' and so willing to expend all of their efforts by funding the democratic party only to be disappointed when the money is squandered and oblivious to the fact we live in a one party system; the corporate party. If some of todays unions participated in a divergence of tactics we could possibly see some results until then it will be more of the same with worse to come.
