It's not and never has been. Psychology is a science, while religion is not. And a state has the right to regulate the practice of medicine.

There's a snicky little point in California Law that bears on this case.

While only State Licensed professionals may do "therapy", anyone can hang out their shingle as a "counselor".

Conversion therapy is designated as a psychological therapy; a counselor could go to jail for using the techniques. And should. Counselors can't do anything beyond verbal interactions. Not that a babbling religious psycho still can't damage a vulnerable teen, but it's easier to reverse.

The specific "services in question were offered under the heading of "spiritual counseling". It will come out in the hearing.

Don't let the details shine excess light upon the truths..... Otherwise, I think it is a stupid idea to begin with. God gave us a free will. As long as you stay out of others faces and leave kids alone, you should be able to do what you want to, including having sex with men if you are a man and likes that .
