My name is Blaine Stanziana, my wife of 25 years went into Pittsburgh's Mercy hospital on October 3rd 2005 for a hysterectomy. Six hours post surgery my wife contracted the flesh eating bacteria called Necrotizing Fasciitis. My wife was now fighting for her life, my wife Nancy underwent 5 emergency surgeries in three days to cut away the abdominal skin wall and tissue to try to stop this very aggressive and life threatening disease. She had contracted it in her hysterectomy incision.

My wife was then placed in Mercy's Trauma Burn Unit Intensive Care on a breathing machine. I did not leave Mercy Hospital for 4 days solid. When it was apparent that the disease was finally stopped, they then placed my wife into another room and left her cut wide open for another 5 days until the 6th and final surgery when plastic surgeons closed her up as best as possible. Mercy hospital is taking no responsibility for this lack of medical sterilization that almost cost me my wife, we are trying to find an attorney that will pursue this matter so it does not occur ever again. I also took pictures of my wife's ordeal while she was in Mercy hospital, they are very disturbing. I believe that my wife Nancy is the first person in Pittsburgh to contract this horrific disease from a medical procedure. Everyday in Pennsylvania, 5 people die from infections they contract while in the hospital !

Two words...Colloidal Silver. It is being used effectively to treat many so-called "untreatable" or "drug-resistant" diseases.

I am glad that your wife has recovered. Best wishes with the lawsuit. I have read that many people contract this disease from surgical procedures. This is not acceptable! Make them PAY!

Blaine,
My 23 year-old brother, who lives and works in the Altoona, PA (Blair County) area, just contracted necrotizing fasciitis on 7/14-15/06. We are not sure how he contracted it---only that it was very aggressive. It grew to a 5x5 area within 5 hours. Somehow it did not spread any further overnight, and he showed it to us the next afternoon. My aunt is a nurse, and when she saw it--she said that she had never seen anything like it before--she talked him into going to the emergency room. He was admitted, but the ER docs thought that he might have MRSA, a community bacterial skin infection. Luckily, though, a (good) surgeon, who was consulting, realized exactly what it was. He rushed him to the OR, and they cut out a pretty decent amount of flesh to get the necrotized tissue out and stopped the spread with 3 extremely strong IV antibiotics.
I hope that your wife pulls out of all of this okay. My brother is doing better; he is at home & wearing a wound V.A.C.. However, he will be physically, emotionally & psychologically scarred for life--I am sure. The thing that really stinks is that we will never know what caused it (although many doctors--not the surgeon--believe that a spider bite (maybe a brown recluse) could have caused it). It is very scary, and my prayers are with you and your family. I would definitely look into this going on in the Pittsburgh area though because my best friend's charge nurse has family in Pittsburgh. The charge nurse's niece & nephew's babysitter contracted necrotizing fasciitis somehow. While everyone says how rare this is supposed to be, according to my friend's account of what her charge nurse said, the babysitter's case was the 5th or 6th in the Pittsburgh area.

My boyfriend had the same ordeal, sort of. What he thought was a spider bite or ingrwon hair, later turned into (within a matter of two days)a huge (and I mean huge) festering sore. When we arrived at the hospital he was admitted (hospital gown, test, the whole 9) within the hour. This "bite" (which was never really given as the reason) had to be drained, gauzed and IV fluids taken for about 2 weeks (along with several types of antibiotics). Infectious Disease doctors were baffeled and still to this day, is of "unknown origin". He has since been released after about a 6 weeks of bed rest (not much rest with a big sore on your abdomen). And the at home cleaning twice a day was the WORST!

It would be interesting if this disease has anything to do with many diseases coming into this country from the Illegal Invasion. Just a thought to consider as the doctors are not commiting to any ryme or reason to the cause. It could be in the food that is packaged by illegal workers, it could be by contact. Who knows. Fruit for thought.
Hope all of your loved ones comeoutof this experience okay.

Sam, I really dont think you can speculate on this thing being brought in by immigrants. That is just ridiculous. In England, we have a lot of trouble with hospital acquired infections and it is due to doctors/nurses neglecting to wash their hands between patients. I for one pray that no one in my family has to enter a hospital.

Here in England the medical staff close ranks too when a family member questions how an infection was caught and even deny the fact of MRSA. We have had so much of this that now people are coming out and sueing the a** off the filthy hospitals. You go for it and good luck to your Mom.

I am getting so angry at the Docs. They cover each others asses. My Moms surgeon will not admit what this bacteria is. He has treated her for Staph. Then tells us to leave the wound open. I am not going to take much more. I have to find a Doc. outside the Mercy Health System to help us.

Wow, that sucks. Thanks to overuse of Antibiotics. Hope she gets better. What was the reason for leaving her open? Maybe they had to see if she was going to be reinfected? im a bit confused. Are you saying she got the flesh eating bacteria because she was left open for 5 days?>
