Caboose out front as Arkansas town seeks visits

Aug 26, 2012 | Posted by: roboblogger | Full story: SFGate

It had been 44 years since the last train car rolled through Pocahontas, and longtime residents of the Randolph County town have missed seeing the old Frisco trains rumble through while heading to Hoxie or Poplar Bluff, Mo.

It has been less than 44 years. I seen Stan Butler from Jones implement where dollar tree is now located. He Unloaded a flatcar of hay bines at the depot dock. that was in 1974. And when they where digging the watershed ditches after that time I seen a train rumble down those tracks. The tracks where unlevel and the train rocked back and forth. Maybe 35 years ago but certianly not 44. I think Declerks LP might have recieved a train car of LP at an even later date.

Add a couple of million dollars to the cost and implement a new tax for it and they just might consider doing that.

A restaurant with a liquor license would help.

Nothing can save Poky now, its doomed to die. Anyone remember the last time a fresh idea was bought up by the powers that be?

pocahontas is dying. the new hwy 67 will miss this town for sure. cost too much money to follow the current 67 hwy to corning. it has 12 bridges that need built. when they can follow the railroads track & just build dirt up. much cheaper way. dirt vs 12 bridges. which way would you go. if the money was coming out of your pocket. my guess dirt, follow the railroad tracks.pocahontas is sure to die.no big wics can save it now.

Even if the four lane 67 went through poky it wouldnt guarntee prosperity. Im of the opinion Poky is dying any way. good four lane 60 MPH road to jonesboro. And gas is still higher in Poky than anywhere else. rhere isnt anything unique or special to attract prosperity to Poky. If a farmer has rice to sell he takes it to jonesboro. beans & wheat to corning or newport.cotton to monette. The main industry in randolph county is farming& timber. There isnt anyplace here to sell logs or lumber. Magee dont buy hardly any wood they are plastic. look at all the places that the four lane road has come through. Go to Newport and take a look? When the four lane us connected between tuckerman & Hoxie. All those towns along route will die. Swifton hoxie & nut hill will decline furthur. The elected officials need to learn to cut back on expenditures they need to not spend more than revenues recieved. I dont reside in randolph county anymore. But I still have real property there.

Better get rid of the property if you can or you will be stuck with it.

Its paid for. and if We sell it the capital gains tax will hit us pretty hard. We got it rented out for hunting & pasture. The last time I sold the timber I got more than I paid for the land. I bulldozed down all the buildings so I wouldnt have to pay taxes on the (improvments)? I suppose we are stuck with it.

Pokey is fighting for its life. A freeway business route through there would help in preserving them. Walnut Ridge is set to be better in the future because of the crossroads of major highways and its closeness to Paragould and Jonesboro, a benefit Pochontas does not have.

The Lions share of manufacturing has left the USA. Walnut ridge looks much the same as decadent citys like clevland or detroit. What has poky to offer besides eating joints and people living off goverment checks? Just what, where, would, why & how would a 4 lane through town change those facts?
