This might be a good fit - check out a new safety technology called SituCon ( ) that schools and universities around the country are deploying which also protects student and teacher privacy. It’s the best of both worlds – safety and privacy. This technology places “eyelids” over the cameras, so that they are only opened when needed. It also gives teachers wireless emergency buttons - If danger arises, with the push of one of these buttons emergency notifications are sent to school administrators and first responders, which detail who pressed the button and where they are in the building. At the same time, as the camera's eyelids open, live video of the situation can be viewed at dispatch centers and on smart phones. An article about it:

Big brother is watching. We should all feel safe now.

I'd rather have privacy.

@Seth: Stop being a spamming salesman. Good concept, but my almost 20 years of military service can see a few holes in the plan. Simplistic counter-measures can defeat the most expensive parts of your system. And in about the same amount of time it would take for a student to eat a pizza, a plan could be devised to compromise the entire system. And you made the problem worse by giving out some the details. Consider a selling strategy that releases information on a "need-to-know basis". Unless you only care about your commission and not the people your system is supposed to protect.

As for the $700K, I sure hope part of that money includes adding WiFi repeaters in the dorms. Having WiFi access in the common areas is nice, but an individuals room is more conducive to quality study time. If the solution is not included in the $700K, then ATU needs to rethink their priorities, which have already proven to be warped when, knowning about the dorm WiFi problem, ATU decides to spend $70-73K on landscaping. What is more important, landscaping or quality education? I don't live on campus, I'm just saying...

Which brings up another point...shouldn't a priority of ATU be preparing their students for the future? If so, then why does ATU allow "tenured" professors to structure their classes in the same way it's been done for decades? It should be a student's choice to use either a paper textbook or a digital textbook (aka eBook, eText, etc.), not the choice of an old-school instructor that refuses to change with the times. Tech should prepare students for beyond 2013, not the 2000's.

Whether it's priorities, technology, or scratching a donor's back, reality it is what it is. Arkansas Tech needs to switch their focus from staying inside their comfort zone, to better preparing students for the future. There are many things that form my opinion of Tech being a good school. Only a few things hold Tech back from being an AMAZING school!

Who am I? It doesn't matter. The only thing that matters is you knowing my statements are based on my experiences from here locally, California, North Carolina, Germany, Ireland, Kuwait, and Iraq.
