Here's an answer for you... the forecast called for the possibility of 1/4" ice accumulation and 8" of ice/freezing rain fell from the sky in less than a couple hours.

There was nothing anyone could do about the problems it caused for interstate traffic. Northern states get snow, not freezing rain. Snow falls slowly and can be managed while freezing rain is completely unmanageable. Salt or sand would have been washed away from roadways and done nothing to prevent freezing. Plows were not an option because they can't travel much better on ice than any other vehicle and 18-wheelers were already blocking both lanes of the interstate.

I think its a bunch of BS. The arkansas highway dept. Did pre-treat the roads. I live right off I-40 in Forrest City. I seen them out sanding/salting the roads. What happened was out of anyones control. It started to rain, which washed away what they were able to get down. The rain turned into a freezing rain, then snow & temps in the single digits. There was NO opportunity to treat the roads again prior to the ice forming. It all happened quickly & once it did, obviously intelligent drivers started getting stuck, jack-kniving, blocking both lanes of traffic, which results in more incidents, more blockages, etc. When that happens how do you expect the highway trucks to get on the roads to sand/salt/clear roads?? When the roads are covered with ice & stranded motorist how do you expect them to just move out of the way so the highway dept can work?? Thats what I thought. Come on people- stop being so stupid- stop looking for someone to blame. The highway dept done what they could.
Its also funny how just weeks before this incident in arkansas, georgia had a similar incident. Such as motorist stranded on highways, running out of fuel, food, ice on roads for days, etc. Yet they didnt go thru the BS that arkansas is. Everyone was so empathetic for them. Why the difference? What did arkansas do that was so much worse then georgia? In my opinion georgia should have fell under much more scrutiny than us because they qll knew it was coming as well & they all decided to let schools/ work, etc out at the same time which put a bunch of morons speeding on the roads to get home or to the stores then home at the same time which resulted in the mess they had. So to me they should be the ones having hearings & everyone mouthing & acting stupid over not arkansas. Again, its just idiots trying find someone to blame. Get over it!!!

Bull shit! I'm always seeing the highway department parked in the company truck smoking a cigarette and drinking a pop. The highway police is always setting inside their vehicle sleep or talking on the cell phone . There are so many dam accidents on Hwy 40 because there isn't enough Hwy patrol officers working.

They're talking about why people were stranded on I-40 and I-55 for almost two days after the last ice storm. And the truth is that no one is to blame because there was nothing that could be done about what happened. Too much ice came too fast and it locked up the interstate.

I also hate people that see the lane closure signs, yet still try and race others to get to the front of the line! Wtf?! This causes congestion and backs up traffic unnecessarily. LEARN TO DRIVE PEOPLE, IT ISN'T ROCKET SCIENCE!!!!!!!

Now look at all the dam pot holes on Hwy 70. what is the Hwy department doing about that? Not a dam thing. I have damage two rims on my vehicle because the Hwy department is setting on their ass and not doing shit about the holes.
