It is good to know that Alabama food stamp program personnel are doing a superior job. Keep up the good work, Matthew 25th chapter says that,( Jesus Christ speaking) " as you do for the least of these , you do it to ME."

i think we are to free giving food stamps to people in our state with out checking these people out first were giving them to people who are not filing taxes were giving them to people that say they are single seperated or divorced living alone with there kids an none of this being checked on drug abuse smoking drugs its like we buy your grocerys an u buy your drugs not fair to the hard working class that have to pay there own way if you apply for any gov asst you should be drug tested an everyone in that household should be also an you must file taxes its only fair pay for what you receive.

My husband and myself have always worked and paid taxes until a few years ago. My husband had an accident on the job and has not been able to work in over 2 years. I had to come out of work also because of illness. I finally went and signed up for food stamps. We recieve the total amount of $38.00 per month food stamps. We only have $600.00 per month income for the two of us. My food stamp letter shows I have no rent or mortgage. Well, I do. I have tried to get in contact with my worker for 2 months, she is never available. What is wrong with Talladega County? If it were not for our children we would not have food. Somebody needs to do something.

If other states are going to look at Alabama as a role model, shouldn't Alabama get itself together first?

What do you mean "get it together" ? There's will always be state workers (any workers) who aren't going to do their jobs. Don't give up on Alabama because of a few bad apples. Alabama is a Great State to live in (as long as you ignore the politics !!)

What does being Caucasian have to do with getting assistance? In this day and time even if you red, blue, yellow or green, the color of your skin shouldn't stop a person from getting assistance. We as a people need to stop being sooo prejudice. I bet the person that made that comment is mad because they couldn't qualify. Where I live caucasians are the ones I see more in the grocery stores with an ebt card.

I have been in your shoes just a tad different. When I had to apply for food stamps after my husband and I both had major health issues like a heart attack, open heart surgery, a leg amputation and there's more. I knew what to do when it comes to filing for food stamps. I know to cross every T and dot every I.
They done that to me also. We had NOTHING coming in, NOTHING. They gave us like 68.00. I fought! How can this be? The dumb worker said I did not turn my lease in. So I asked her do you think 2 people can run up an electric bill of almost 200.00 living in a tent? OR am I just not the right color? Sorry but that is how I feel. It is no secret watch and you shall see.
The best I can help you with is keep calling until someone answers to you. Re-apply, Re-apply Re-apply until someone hears you, and see's this!
When I got done here in Florida, I ended up with 192.00 per month for two people. No children! But both of us very sick!
Again, I will say when I got through in Florida, they cringed when I walked in the door. I will be HEARD and YOU will LISTEN!
Sadly that is how you must be!
Wake up one morning with the weight of the world on your shoulders, tired of ignorance, GET PISSED and make yourself KNOWN! GO THERE! KEEP GOING UNTIL SOMEONE ANSWERS!
If that doesn't work get out pen and paper and begin to write to everyone you can think of. Senator, Congressmen, Obama, ALL of them!
Some folks just have to fight like pit bulls to wake up the food stamp workers. Some just get all kinds of crap handed to them! So you go and FIGHT!
You said you have children? I suggest you GO to them FACE UP and MAKE someone listen.
I know someone in Georgia that has three children and they get over 600.00 in stamps not to mention all the medical for the five of them and probably housing, along with a welfare check!
GO, BE HEARD! AND "DO NOT" BE "NICE", AT ALL!
DO NOT BE "NICE" WHEN YOU "WRITE" PEOPLE EITHER, JUST DON'T CUSS. NOW I WOULD, BUT I WOULD NOT TELL ANYONE ELSE TO CUSS. F I G H T !!!!!!!!!!
Good luck!!

I am white, and I do not get any food stamps, housing or even health coverage, for my husband to speak of, any way. You may not think so but, I have seen it, and I throw it at the workers, if I must. I do not care of they are black either. That is why some people can not get help, because of the black so called worker, that does not do their JOB!
Don't believe me?
Experiment with it.
You and a black person go with the same exact problems and see what happens~!
fair warning: you will then get pissed as heck!

Obviously I live in Florida, However, I have a whole lot of family that live in Alabama. I love Alabama!
Especially where my folks are from. There is just a HUGE amount of love and care you feel in this one horse town, so to speak...
I just felt the need to throw that out there!

Oh Gosh, I just realized i was the 11th poster. I have a problem with that number but I now view it as a good thing instead of a negative thing, as I feared it at first.
I know this will sound nuts but that darn number follows me everywhere!
I tried to get my husband to commit me because of this number.
So I had to come back in to make the numbers change.
Yes, I am nuts! But I am a good nut!

i work in a small retail store in north alabama. i have welfare mothers that come in to shop with carts of dirty kids, and want to use their food stamp cards to buy their man body wash, car wash soap, toys, dog items etc... i think this should be put a stop too. you should not be able to use food stamp cards for anything other than food. period, point blank. end of story. my tax dollars that i have always paid in should not be purchasing toys, man body wash etc. someone needs to put some of these people to work. if you need help and are hard working, have become sick, disabled, laid off by all means, you should have help ... having lots of babies for a check , and being to lazy or trashy to work should not bump you to the front of the list with lots of tax payers money for benefits! it makes me angry to have this happen. it is not fair! things need to change across the board! if we can have tattoos on us, wear decent clothes and have a better than thou attitude we can work and help buy some of the things we want. its not right! and no i do not believe illegals should come to my country and suck up all of my tax dollars to recieve food benefits, free free free! they need to deported, the borders closed. and with it alot of crime would go with it! maybe i should quit my job and enjoy all the freebies i can get..but no, i cant i am white. and we have needed help before and didnt get it.. i have to work 2 jobs to get my kids what they need,, example. poptarts and milk. not man body wash and car wash soap.

I agree with you Frank.I think you might be confused. The food stamp card is also for welfare monies, monies for the needs of the family like toilet tissue, shampoo, soap. Also used to help pay electric. So the one card holds it all food stamps and welfare money.
I have seen people do the same, I get so irate I can hardly hold back what I wish to say. I was behind a lady who used WIC to pay for formula to the tone of $75.00, then used the ebt card to help pay for the diapers. She looked and felt so ashamed, appeared she did work. When my son was laid off I made him apply for stamps. My husband and I are both disabled, you must know how that works. He had to do 16 of community service per month and look for ex amount of jobs per month. When turned in they put $25.00 on the ebt card.
Now listen to this. When everything was pulled out from under me and my husband, health failing problems, I knew exactly what to do. They gave us, 2 people $62.00. I flipped we had absolutely no money at all coming in. They claimed I did not turn in my lease B/S. I knew what to bring in to them. Then they finally upped it to $192.00 per month for two people. Now why is that?
If one person can get $162.00 shouldn't ours of been double that?
Another thing I would like to know is why if by law we must have car insurance to drive, when you apply for stamps they do not include that? Nor do they include the medication cost.
Maybe Obama will do some changes.
I am from the old school and believed a mother should be home for her children. When the system forced me out of the system my children went hog wild. So sadly my having and being forced to work cost me a lot more in the long run.
The safety and protection of my children.
Having said all that I am not capable of making babies alone, what father stepped up to the plate? NONE!
My husband made a good point yesterday,if you get welfare, food stamps and medicaid all in a year why should you be entitled to the tax deduction of the kids at the end of the year?
You don't seem to be blind to things but, think about all this and how unfair it is, and unless and until, we get to Obama, he will not be convinced.
I can not get to him by way of phone and yes I tried!
I can not get to him by way of the internet.
I will have to write a letter.
I know of a store that doesn't do well so they allow the folks with food stamps to get gas, cigarettes and so on.

again, those whom need help should be able to get it... there is no shame in needing help, when you have worked and paid your taxes - by all means-get it. but i agree with the one comment about not being able to count all those exemptions at the end of the year.. you should not be able to do it.. period, they would have enjoyed all those benefits through the years.. all i am saying is able bodied folks should work and stop having babies they can not help feed and rely on my tax dollars for luxuries that i do not get to enjoy, for FREE.. that is my point. when you have been sick, disabled, out of work... get the help.. my day may come and i will get the help too, i have paid my taxes and worked for decades.. there is no shame in getting help. but taking advantage is what makes me mad...it is not right, welfare reform is needed, food stamp reform is needed. the folks that are hungry need it, they are the ones that have more than likely worked to pay their taxes and can not get a dime! that is bull crap! welfare should not pay for items such as smokes and booze... same as ebt should not pay for no edibles! it should be down loaded from the state to where registers cant run those cards to purchase those items... and to boot that, i emailed the state to complain.. never heard a word out of them. perhaps they should be reminded those paychecks are paid because the rest of us pay our taxes by working... so they can enjoy their benefits and the welfare people can buy their booze and smokes.. it is bull!

Where I work, we have quite a number of food stamp forms that employees turn in to our payroll department to be filled out. It's rare to see the same form come through. I haven't really checked out whether there is a bigger difference with white people versus black people but I know that many people get the run around. Some people will come in (their first time filing for food stamps - many of whom look/act embarassed to have to ask us to fill out the employment verification) and the case worker will just tell them to have a letter written to state their hours, pay rate, etc. Later, they will tell them it isn't enough and will send them back with a different form. I've seen numerous forms and I can't figure out why that is, since they all are filing in the same county. I know that here in Morgan County, depending on the last name, you are divided up and given to a certain case worker. It seems that a lot of it depends on the case worker - and don't tick them off in the short time you get to talk with them!

But I know from first hand experience that the system is SO very flawed. I was sick (told I would never work again) when my husband got on drugs and walked out (mind you, he was a police officer and we were the typical, mid-income family). I suddenly had a mortgage to pay on my own, 3 children to feed/cloth/etc, and had no way to do it. Fortunately a new medication came out and I was able to go back to work slowly - by starting my own business so I could be home with my youngest. I applied for food stamps and because I owned a business, they only counted 40% of my income. I was getting $400 a month in groceries!(I couldn't spend it all because I'm thrifty and still used coupons. I bought extra food and donated it so it would go to good use for others.)

I got well enough to work a 40 hr/week job when my youngest reached school age - which would help me pay for my medical insurance (so I wouldn't have to pay $400/month for coverage). I make less than I did when I had my own company (but come out slightly better because of the insurance and other benefits), however, when I tried to reapply - I qualified for $42 a month! It wasn't worth the hassle and the humilitation. I save that much when I use coupons. Plus, I didn't get a hassle while telling them ('proving') what I made in my own business, but they returned my form 3 times when I had to have my income verified through my employer (they kept sending additional paperwork). It was ridiculous!

The sad thing is that when I first applied, I had no proof of income other than what was written in my books. I taught piano/voice lessons so it wasn't like I had a list of products to keep up with. They took my word on it. And while I told the truth, I can only imagine how easy it is to play the system!

So in my case, it does seem that when I was trying to do more for myself and for my children, I was punished. The money that was coming in was pretty much the same. I can only imagine that people who don't have a good work ethic would take the step backward and allow others (the government) take care of their needs.

It's wonderful that we live in a country where people who are down can have programs to help them. I think it's sad that we live in a country where people are raised to be dependent upon those services and who feel that they are "owed" something. Now it's only getting worse. Welcome to Obamanation - where you will be penalized for trying to make a better life for your family and will have to pay for those who sit and wait on a handout.
