MSNBC documentary depicts life, death at Alabama's Holman Prison

There are 41 comments on the The Associated Press story from Dec 28, 2007, titled MSNBC documentary depicts life, death at Alabama's Holman Prison . In it, The Associated Press reports that:

“It's going to be a pretty small fan club”

Grantt Culliver is Alabama's only prison warden with a show on cable TV.

Culliver runs Holman Prison, which has been featured this fall on an MSNBC series documenting life inside some of America's toughest maximum-security prisons.

'Lockup: Holman Extended Stay' is gripping for its stark view of life at Holman. Its cameras encountered blood spilled during a prisoner assault, overcrowding, white supremacists and homosexual inmate 'marriages.'

The show also has depicted monthslong stays in solitary confinement, prison weapons and an inmate moonshine called 'julep.' Producers sometimes resorted to subtitles because of the background noise and syrup-thick Southern drawls. Read more

i think warden culliver is GREAT! i work in the prison system - not in alabama though. the mian focus at our prison is sanitation - which mind you is VERY important. but so is the disciplinary aspect. our prison our squeaky clean but the inmates are off the chain. i wish our warden was more like warden culliver.

I know warden culliver has a job to do and he is doing a great one. However when you have someone like bobby gillard (snake) who is doing life and wants to past time by playing chess. Where do you draw the line for changing the rules for people that are so limited.

Ya I saw the Warden. God works in mysterious ways.
This warden has the communication skills necessary to do the job he does. I wish more people in the corrections industry where as well experienced in life skills as Grant Culliver.

Its a tough job and this man is a magician.

God bless you and keep you safe always.

I know for a fact that Holman Prison is not what it looks like on tv. I know people there and visit down there and they mistreat prisoners behind close doors.

All these guys sitting around locked up in prison, I think Gov. Riley should open up the ELECTRIC BENCH and get rid of the Chair! There should be a public frying on Sat. night to watch! They have no right to be out in our world with our children. We pay a lot of tax dollars to keep them locked up and the more we get rid of the better!Ihave no sympathy for these people they new the rules and they broke them. They should pay. They have ruined a many of families and have no respect for people in general.

First off let me say I feel after reading most of the comments that people posted is very shallow, and some very ignorant worldly minded people who's overlooking the deeper aspects of the situation. People all over the world are being executed, and you have people like from Sacramento, Ca. talking about cute as a bug in a rug with her corny ass. Yes I am from South Central LA born in raised spent over 20 yrs in state facilities on all lifer yards. Been free for over 8 years 3000+ miles away from CaliF. and I have a very prosperous life, and have been very blessed by the Lord in Savior JESUS CHRIST no doubt. I still have that solider status within and no i am not no joke. Everybody is in prison and say they did not do it, but most probally have which there are those who are innocent i know because my 1st prison conviction i was framed which is past and optimistically that what seemed bad then was God setting me up for success, and yes I am very successful. Might be sitting next to you on a domestic or international flight to where ever i choose to go. Now to this Warden very intellegent like satan is the 2nd most intellegent in this world, but many people is deceived. So I will not judge, but it all looks good in sound good, but Mr. Executioner you do know... which only the Holy Spirit reveals, and repentence is the key, and if it is too dark which God allowed that is something that have to be dealt with when you get there, because it will be dealt with because VENGENCE IS MINES SAYS THE LORD BECAUSE AS YOU KNOW HE IS "I AM" It is easy to decieve ignorant and especially stupid people, but do not be surprised when GOD lift them up, and they become stronger then those who practice oppression if the shoe fit wear it. I do not condone crime in any fashion, but again I love my "I AM" UNFADEABLE PEACE...

In regards to Grant Culliver, something about him rubs me wrong. I just want to know why he said on one particular episode "wait until we get these cameras out of here, we gonna put him outside."
What does that mean? I have to wonder if he's treating certain inmates in a manner in which he shouldn't. Yes, they are criminals, but a person is a person. We've all done wrong in our lives. I personally don't think that a person that got caught selling $100 worth of crack should spend the next 10-20 years or more in prison. That is ridiculous, and criminal in my mind. Thats another issue though. And yes, the death penalty is VERY wrong, and it should be outlawed. Its barbaric to tell a man he is going to die on a certain day. You can say otherwise, but if you do, its only because you are ignorant and you lack empathy for others. I don't care what there crime is, if you have any sort heart, you would see where walking a man to his death is wrong. Last meal? What kind of sh*t is that? Its almost as if you're picking! Thats not a "decent act!" A decent act would be leaving that persons fate up to God and Nature.

Warden Culliver should come here to Britain and show our pathetic judicial system how criminals should be treated!!
