if a felon is so violent that he should not have a firearm, then he should be locked up for life. Why don't we have more control over the repeat offenders instead of trying to control their tools? If we had more control over the violent criminals maybe we (law abiding citizens) would not NEED to have the guns.

We still need the guns for other legal purposes though :). With the lack of moral values these days as well as the lack of regard for human life, a first time offender might have already committed a violent act. So the need for the gun will still remain even then.
