The BLM policy that allows fires to burn unabated until structures are threatened is certainly a cost saver but it would seem that if such fires are within a one hundred mile radius of Fairbanks that a more aggressive effort to snuff the fires early would be a lot more healthy for the folks here as well as save money for the fire fighters who must go into crisis mode to fight the larger fires. But that would mean less money for those folks in a slow economy right?? I was in a Cessna 180 and was the second to report the fire near Clear creek butte and watched from my home as it expanded over the next two weeks. At the time I saw it, one or two fire retardant drops would have extinguished the fire. Where is the logic in current policy around our town??
