Even as kings and presidents post status updates on their Facebook pages and appear on "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno," Pope Benedict XVI has remained above it all, unreachable for comment or clarification, visible only from a balcony or in his popemobile bubble.

..... He never was a Nazi. In his days in Germany it was compulsory for boys of his age to be members of the "Hitler youth", similar to the Boy Scouts, except that instead of in God they believed in Hitler, and they were prepared for later service in the military.

When I was being taught Catechism, one of the requirements was that should it come to pass, we should be willing to give up our lives rather than go against the church. Ratzi wasn't willing to do that, and unless the teachings changed over the years, he should have adamantly refused to join the Hitler youth, no matter what the consequences. Why was that required of us in the fifties when HE was never put to the test? That's from the old Baltimore Catechism. Look it up if you can get a copy.
