Riptides scare the piss out of me. They say if you're ever caught in one, let it take you out and then start swimming parallel to shore. But I bet it's easy to start panicking and expend all your strength, and go under.

Nothing like scaring people to death, which is what happens in a case like this. We used to go down to Nags head and swim all the time actually at times trying to take a ride on the rip tides. It was a fast way to take a leisurely ride along the beach letting mother nature do the work. Its people dumb perseptions that cause them to become alarmed when caught up in the tides.

Mr. Balsley was a wonderful man with a wonderful and loving family. Comments such as yours prove that ignorance really is bliss.

EDT, you must consider the source...as "Reality Bites" likes to write: "perseptions matter."
(I thought you'd appreciate that being a teacher.)

Fear usually stems from a lack of understanding or just plain ignorance. This poor man had no understanding what the forces at play here and was ingrained from youth to fear the unknown. Hence a tragic unforunate death that could of been prevented had he been taught not to listen to those who breed the fear, like lifeguards.

Gee, his dad took a lot of risks (and had a lot of success as a result of this), so I wonder who taught him to fear the unknown?
Perhaps he infarcted whilst swimming?
(Thank you for the background on his upbringing and how he was taught as a child. That immensely helps to clarify his ignorance.)

Mr./Ms. Bites-

Mr. Balsley and his siblings swam in our backyard pool with my sister, brother, and me throughout our childhood years. You know nothing about his upbringing or his swimming abilities. You also seem to be quite unfamiliar with the duties and services of lifeguards and beach rescue personnel. I suppose you feel that EMS, law enforcement officers, and firefighters are the breeders of fear as well.

All the people above with the rude comments- how many of you even really knew Greg Balsley??? I knew Greg and I know his wife Dania - great people-salt of the earth people. Greg has always contributed to his community- he has been an outstanding - husband- father- and grandfather as well as a terrific businessman in selling Real Estate. Greg and his beautiful wife Dania just happened to be at Nags Head celebrating 25 years of marriage- the anniversary was the 15th of June. This wonderful family is grieving and they dont need the snarky comments made by some of the people up above. If you dont know the person then keep your mouth shut about what kind of person they are!!!
Accidents happen- I am sure that nobody expected things to happen they way they did- I am sure Greg was a very good swimmer. Not being there I dont know what would have caused him to drown- but I unlike other are not going to speculate on something I dont know about.
My heart and prayers go out to the whole Balsley family- one of the most wonderful families I have ever known!! RIP Greg Balsley your friends love and miss you!!!

According to WITN, caution flags were not flown at the time of the accident. I believe the flags were up the two days prior to the accident.

It stated that the red flags had been up for two days - Monday and Tuesday I am assuming- but it did not say the red flags were still up on the day that Greg Balsley drown. I know Greg well enough to know he would NOT have been swimmimg where it wasnt allowed- especially with somebody that he would have felt responsible for. Accidents happened- maybe the red flags had been take down to soon- maybe the current was swifter than what was anticipated- we may never know. But I do know a family is torn apart and grieving and I dont think we need to be making negative comments about a person who is dead and gone- that has family that loved them. All of Greg's friends (and that is a lot) have had a lot to deal with today- not to mention Greg's family. Lets leave the negative and snarky comments stop and have a little bit of love and compassion for this man and his great family!!!
