Wow, Dick, this is the second article you've written on Gavin Smith in 2 months. I'm sure there are other interesting tennis players in York County besides him. I can't believe you bought into this spoiled rich kid's hissy fit because he didn't get the #2 seed. If only Billy Heird had shown up this year, because then Smith would be the #4 seed and he'd really throw a fit. Better yet, it's a shame that Phil Bayliss didn't come back also. There are plenty of players better than Gavin Smith, is he going to argue that he deserves the #2 seed over them too?

Isn't tennis a sport that's supposed to be played for fun? No one is winning money for how they do in this tournament. In order to win the tournament you have to be able to beat everyone anyway so Gavin should just go do his talking with his racket, not through the media. I'm disappointed in the media for even writing about such a meaningless dispute.

Actually I think Gavin only does his talking through VanOlinda, not his racket.

Gavin continues to cry like a little girl for not getting a 2 seed, Mic is a fantastic player and deserves to be ahead of him. It could have made more sense to have Gavin possibly play Mic in the semi-finals, but the draw was made randomly so he should stop complaining.

People are failing to see the point here - this is not about Gavin Smith. This is about tridition and doing the right thing. Gavin being 3rd isn't the point - the point is the #2 seed should be in his half of the draw. Know one will ever know who clearly is the better player or who is that day.

Sounds like a whiny crybaby to me!!! If you think you are that good then you should be able to win from the last seed position! Hell he has lost for the past two years! he should have dropped more!

It is sad to see what was a wonderful City County Tournament be such a joke. Perhaps we need tournament directors that have experience running tournaments, are reputable tennis players and respected tennis people in the County. That might encourage more people to get in the tournament knowing it would run smoothly. Everyone makes mistakes even the USTA but they correct them when realized. I agree with the professional's opinion. This is not a issue of a 2 or 3 seed, it's about them being in the same half of the draw. I hope the City will take applications for next years tournament and and screen the applicants for directors with more experience.

Look at the wimbledon draw,#1 Federer drew #3 Djokovic. The #3 and #4 seeds are always drawn randomly, this is the fair way that draws are done.

Yeah, if Gavin isn't afraid to lose than it shouldn't matter whether he is on the side of the draw with Wallace or Kohr. If he wants to be the best, he has to beat the best. If those of you think it's an easy job to be tournament directors, then maybe you should try it and actually see the kind of time and effort you have to put into it. So you're not the #2 seed. Big whoop. You would be in the same situation if Billy Heird, Phil Bayliss, Sean Kelleher, or Ben Zink showed up for the tournament.

People who are in the 4th seeds quarter would suffer because there chances to make a semi-final would go down also. Can't switch the draw for one dude having draw problems

There are two types of tournament formats. A bracket, like NCAA basketball, and a draw. Tennis "traditionally" uses a draw. USTA uses a draw format so they would have done it no differently. So to go to a bracket format and not draw the names randomly would break the tradition you're crying out for. The debate of which player is better is not necessarily pertinent to the tournament and they can go out any day they want and settle it on their own when they have time. For the record, I think the tournament directors are doing very well at running the tournament and sticking to their guns in the face of controversy. I dont think the seedings were correctly delegated, however, once a draw is out all you can do is play tennis.

If Gavin is seriously going to whine about not playing because of the seeding than he shouldn't even be allowed to play in any of the York tournaments. If he was a real tennis and thought he was good enough to win than he would take the seeding he got, played and showed the tournament directors that they seeded him in the wrong play. The directors were right about seeding him because all tournaments officals seed the players based on rankings from Middle States not on ITA rankings. But Gavin withdrawling from this tournament because of the seeding make him looks like an idiot and a little tennis whiner that no one wants to play tennis with.

George, you've got some serious issues to be this obsessed with a 20 year old kid.

Gavin should have been seeded #2 as they've done traditionally. Gavin would beat that Mic kid easily.

George is a funny dude. And Mic Wallace is like 30 years old so you would really know who could beat him since you don't even know how old he is.
