Shocking that you'd post this the day before the Preakness, one of the biggest horse races in the U.S. each year. I'm not saying it isn't an awful story or that something doesn't need to be done. It's obvious somethings wrong here. What I'm saying is that it's a cheap shot at horse racing when it's down after the Eight Belles tragedy in the Derby. This was nothing more than another attempt to pacify the morons at PETA and add fuel to the fire. I hope that the PETA folks try to go on the track tomorrow and disrupt the race as they've threatened. It will be fun to see how a human handles over 10 tons of horse flesh flying at 40mph towards them. I assure you the carnage will be better than anything Boogard or Simon could ever dream of creating on the ice. I'd expect more from the local paper, but pandering to special interests is part of the media's new game too, not just the politicians they cover.

Except I'm worried that running into the PETA nuts would injure the horses. Race horses can break their legs easily. How typical of PETA airheads not to take this into consideration.

Db you stated that - " I'm noy saying it isn't an awful story (which it is), or that something doesn't need to be done" and "its obvious somethings wrong here" (in the racing world). So how is the article "Shocking because its posted the day before the Preakness" and "a cheap shot to horse racing"? Does everyone have to wait until the Triple Crown is over to address the atrocities happening to these horses everyday? Is the racing industy really that pompous? Anyways, its to late- its in the public eye people are waking up and the time for change is now!

You think the AP would have sent somebody to find a negative story about horse racing? PUH-Leeze. Second, this isn't even about US horse racing. It's another freaking country. Again, I'm not saying what is happening there is right, but it's not indictive of the U.S. So to lump the U.S. horse racing industry off this article is exactly what the paper is probably hoping for. As I stated, I'm not saying the story doesn't have merit. But the timing of it is cheap and it's meant to drum up the bad memories of two weeks ago. Is there even another story in the paper about The Preakness tomorrow? Yeah, at the very, very bottom of the sports only tab. Why not link that up too? You know, Big Brown ran one of the great Derby races in the last 15 years if you had bothered to watch. Since I love to read great ideas, what are your ideas in regards to the "time for change" which you call for? I'll let you know what I do: I go to Canterbury about 40 times per summer and play the horses. I donate to several different horse racing charities that care for retired horses and injured and paralyzed jockeys. I've posted on various blogs all over the Internet for a year questioning the amount of drugs that are being used on our horses and calling for bans on some of them. To the other person who posted: I know about the horses getting injured if PETA goes out on the track. That was just another example of a lunatic fringe group speaking without thinking, just like their blaming of the jockey for Eight Belles. They'll hear those hooves pounding and think twice. They aren't that stupid.

What will happen to beef cattle, and chickens, and pigs if we stop using them for food? What do you think will happen to pets if people stop caring for them? If PETA psychos had their way, soon there would be nothing left of any domesticated animal species. If you make them useless, they will simply die out. Domesticated animals are not wild animals, if they are not cared for by people, they die. Arrogant idiots!!

Horses are like fricken rabbits. Breed them, use them while they have a use, then the world needs dog food and glue. What is the issue here? Bunch of cry babies..... Just like a feral cats in my book. They are of no use either. Shoot them and be done. They make the flowers grow.

Well, after one generation there would be far fewer of these animals requiring care, because there would be no incentive to force-breed them. Re: the current generation of animals, why not simply take care of them and let them live their lives? Who says the only two choices are to use/exploit them to death or to abandon them? That sounds great, but these animals are extremely expensive to keep alive for no return. The land that is used to graze them would be used for something else because the property taxes would simply be to high for the ranchers/farmers/breeders to keep it with no return on investment. Not only that, but I was referring to PETA's stance which is that people should not own animals. That animals should be free to do what they want and go where they want with no human interference. All of these animals would be exterminated as nuisances within 5 years if this policy was adopted. Domesticated animals cannot survive without human intervention. Period!!!!

The HSUS Facts on US Horse Slaughter ***How many horses are slaughtered each year? Tens of thousands of live horses are transported across the border to Mexico and Canada for slaughter. ********** ***Who eats horse meat? The largest markets are France, Belgium, Holland, Japan, and Italy. ********** ***How do unwanted, surplus horses end up at slaughterhouses? Most horses destined for slaughter are sold at livestock auctions or sales. Often, terrified horses and ponies are crammed together and transported to slaughter in double-deck trucks designed for cattle and pigs. Some horses arrive at the slaughterhouse seriously injured or dead. ********** ***How are the horses killed? Highly alert horses are stabbed multiple times in the neck with "puntilla knife" to sever spinal cords. The horse is conscious, is "not" stunning method. It paralyzes, leaving horses twitching on the ground, unable to move or breathe, death from suffocation or blood loss & dismemberment. With US export of horses to slaughter over 300%, undercover footage shows live horses dragged, whipped, crammed in trucks in 110 tmp to a horrific form of slaughter in MX & CN. Conditions in slaughterhouses—stressful & extremely frightening. ********** ***Which kinds of horses are slaughtered? Horses slaughtered include (losing race horses) lame or ill, riding school, camp horses, pergnant mares, foals -"byproducts" of (PMU), drug Premarin®. Ponies, mules, donkeys as well. HSUS investigators witnessed horses purchased for slaughter in good health, bought for a few hundred dollars. Horses of all ages & breeds are slaughtered, from draft to miniatures. ********** ***What is The Humane Society of the United States doing to protect horses? The HSUS continues to assist states in passage of effective laws to govern treatment of horses sold for slaughter within their borders. __________ More Facts on Horse Slaughter: http://www.hsus.org/horses_equines/issues/get...

Kill them all and grind them up for dog food!! We get all excited about a horse but don't care about the number of children that are aborted?? Hhow many kids are killed everyday by their Borderline Personality mothers because they are inconvenient( explanation: How can I date guys for drugs and sex if I am pregnant??) It is a child not something that would be normally soaked up with a hygiene product!!

FYI - Puerto Rico is an “unincorporated territory” of the United States which according to the United States Supreme Court is “a territory appurtenant and belonging to the United States, but not a part of the United States.” If they are so poor so as not to be able to take proper care of non producing horses - maybe they should not be horse racing at all!
