Horse racing is a cruel and pointless sport. Treating an animal like a machine cruel and inhumane.

Years ago, I went to one of these "sporting events". The track was wet and sloppy and in the first five races, two different horses stumbled and fell. In the sixth race the third horse that went down that day broke its front leg so bad, it was put down right on the track. The sight of that poor horse trying to run through the infield on three legs, while being chased down by these "horse lovers" was sickening.

Moronic people sitting in the stands around me were complaining that it was delaying the other races for that day.

Once this poor animal had been removed the races started again, and I left in complete and utter disgust.

Out on their ears? I was thinking they should be out on somewhere quite a bit lower.

My heart goes out to Ms Eight Belles, the horse with the champions' heart. If you ask me, she won that race, not big brown. I hope there wasn't any foul play of any kind, to make that horse get hurt like that. Poor little filly ran her heart out today, and it cost her dearly. She will always be remembered as the Champion she was. I will remember her. I wish to give my heart felt condolences to her owners, they lost a great horse today, and I am sure she will sorely be missed. May God bless her soul. Yes, animals have souls too.
Donna, I got cold chills reading your post. Eight Belles was a beautiful champion. My hope is God takes these animals to heaven, and I believe He does. The Bible says he made all things to his liking, so I don't know why we shouldn't expect Him to have her in heaven today. I am thankful she didn't suffer long and am sure she was covered with love in her last minutes of her life. Such a heartbreaking freak accident.

Folks, let's be honest here- it's all about the money- that's why horses are raised to race. otherwise they become happy family pets until they are sent with the "killer buyers" who now ship them to a horrific death in Mexico- and if you are curious about that go to the Humane Society of United States website and see just how horribly they die, stabbed until they fall down, then their throats cut. all that for some horse meat.

At least this horse died a relatively painless death, unlike those sold daily at auctions to buyers- go check out the horse auctions over in Lancaster, along Rte 30 sometime. The Amish dump their worn out horses there, just as they sell off their puppy mill dogs to the unsuspecting.

and you know why this goes on? because people support these activities with their money. do you think this would have happened if NO ONE came to the Kentucky Derby, or Preakness, or the other race tracks? NO- but humans have never minded watching animals suffer for their own pleasure. Where do you think Pit Bull baiting came from? Pits in a ring with a tied up bull, tearing it to shreds

No, we tend to be a species that enjoys the torment of humans ( remember the Roman colleseum?)and animals. Think about circus elephants and lions, hauled from place to place and forced to perform( Ringling Bros.). or the use of live animals for product testing( think of Draino in the bunny's eyes).

Open your eyes to the suffering all around you- then do something to bring about change. check out www.hsus.org for ways to help. and please, those of you who lovingly condone the abuse of animals, don't bother to respond with your bulls**t.

I have seen horses break two to three ankles just running and playing in the pasture by themselves with out a rider !! True it doesnt happen every day,but it does happen !

Amen. If heaven doesn't permit animals then I'm not going. I choose to go where the animals go. Some have said to me, "Then you can't be with your loved ones in heaven." Fine. I don't know too many who died who had a snowball's chance of heaven, anyway, so I'll go with the animals and that would truly be haeven.
Jesse Duplantis said in his book he has transcended to heaven and there are animals in heaven! Why wouldn't God have them in heaven? He mentioned horses over 150 times in the Bible. Without a doubt, He loves them too.

Yes animals are mentioned in the Bible, but it does not say they are in heaven and it doest say they are not... We should only go by what the bible says, not by what it does not say...Unless you want to start a cult....thats what they do....start a new doctrine on what the bible does not say !

I really don't understand why they have to put a horse to sleep because it breaks a bone in its leg.

Lets all keep one thing in mind here, Nothing will last forever, Bells could of died from colic, or another horse kicking her in the leg, so no matter if you keep your self in a padded sell and eat raw vegies a parasite could kill you, People in this country need to leave things alone that dont affect them personaly.
All the people that got horses from being slaughtered here in Amreica are not thinking, Now the horses are being shipped to other countries and still being slaughtered, but its not in the humane way Americans slaughtered them, now the animals have to suffer a lot more before actually dieing, this would not be the case if people would of left slaughtering horses alone.
Animals are not going to live forever.
Gregory, I am an animal lover but I agree with you wholeheartedly. Slaughterhouses need to be reopened. We have had a big problem with people starving horses in Kentucky this past winter. Do you have any suggestions on what we, the people, can do to have the slaughterhouses reopened?
All the time and money the taxpayers have paid for Congress to pass such stupid laws makes me sick!
Don't say to write your representative. I called about the horse slaughter ban to voice my opinion and received a form letter from the representative about a cigarette tax.
For all the money spent and time wasted, humane slaughter could have been developed, and farmers would not be in the bind they are today.
Please, if you have any suggestions, let me know.

We should take a survey around the animal world, among wild animals and domesticated. Is life better and more humane in the wild, or do they like being under the care and control of humans?
Also, are animals competitive naturally, or are they just racing or performing because they are forced to?
I have no idea, but these are the questions I'd need answered to come up with an opinion of all of this.
I've never been to a horse race, although they happen all around me.
Sure, it's all about money.
That's why I prefer stock car racing. It's a lot cheaper than what our two pet horses cost me. Bonus: no animal rights group can attack me there, and I get my needs for competitiveness fulfilled.
