Hollywood rarely does biographical horse films well and really blew it on a few duh-obvious facts.(1) On March 30, the day Secretariat was foaled, no one in Denver, CO would have been shorts-ing it around their fully leafed-out, tree-lined and filled unheated outdoor swimming pool,(2) Secretariat - as with any thoroughbred race horse - would have been a year or more before his first start, not two weeks out, and (3) at the Kentucky Derby, "My Old Kentucky Home" isn't sung until the first horse steps onto the track. Still, John Malkovich can curse at me in coached French or any other language whenever he's in town.

Sorry - missed adding "registered" when talking about Secretariat's qualifications to enter his first race.

I was fortunate to see Secretariat in the match race at Arlington Park Race track in Illinois....and saw him in his retirement at Claiborne Farms in Paris, KY. He was truly one big beautiful horse and did like to pose for pictures and those pictures are treasured by my family. I don't watch the Thoroughbred racing anymore.
It's just not the same as in the 70's.
This movie brought back many memories of this almost perfect horse. I even bought a Thoroughbred/Quarter that resembled Secretariat in 1976, he was my best friend for 30 years!!!

You can lead a horse to water,
but you can't lead a horticulture.

I agree with the guy in the article who said forget about the fictitious parts and just be glad the world is learning about this amazing horse.

I watched all three races, and any image of the the Great Secretariat still makes me weep with wonder, awe, and appreciation. He was a gift to the world.

My husband saw the movie today. I saw Secretariat win on tv back in '73. It certainly brought back an exciting time and the movie is well worth seeing Secretariat win all over again. Everyone should see it. Can't wait until it comes out on video/dvd so I can purchase it.

I saw the movie today and really enjoyed it -- it was suspenseful and exciting, even though we all know the outome. It's full of wonderful photography, and it's a great story worth re-telling. So what if there are a few anachronisms and factual errors -- it really doesn't matter. My only objection was the gospel music -- it seemed inappropriate and out of place.

I enjoyed the movie immensely, however, am I the only one who wondered what the heck happened to Stevie Cauthen?? Or is my age catching up with me?

I finally watched "Secretariat" the movie. Steven Crist's comments in his article rang true for me as well. Disney has once again sanitized film for our safe consumption...making certain to turn the sport of horse racing into a romantic "bubble-gum for the mind" film by eliminating any suggestion of its seedy side. Taking non-fiction and turning it into fiction doesn't have much depth. I should have known what I was getting into the minute I saw the Disney logo on the screen. Too sad...the real story was so much better.

Just seen Secretariat on DvD. I can remember seeing the race in 73 but back then didn't pay it much attention. What a great feel good sappy movie so what things arent 100% accurate who cares. The story of this wonderful horse transends still today. I am now trying to find a horse for my chidren to ride and now
have put something else in the bucket list , visit Belmont and the run for roses. Secretariat still creates a wonderful emotion. This will be a great year for the sport of Horse Racing.
