I do not think it has been reported that the ones who are still employed were not working overtime. Even if they were not in the long run a contracted employee costs less then a regular employee.

DHS wrote: <quoted text> It would not have made a difference....The ignorance that goes on in the world doesn't fall short because of 6 missing officers....These cuts are happening around the world but only when someones life is taken do we suggest that officers are brought back...Crime keeps officers employed and at times people lives are at stake because of it...Before these cuts look at how high crime was and then answer this question....WOULD IT HAVE MADE ANY DIFFERENCE....May the young lady REST in Peace...and may GOD have mercy on her soul....BTW with all those people there why aren't we hearing of any witnesses?...Thanks all you concerned citizen behind your closed doors... Yes, it would have made a difference. It simple math really. Where you see one LBPD officer, you see a connection to dozens of officers who can respond to a scene. With the school police, you see a connection to how many? The single digits they have on duty at any one time. No fault of theirs, they do a great job as far as I am concerned, but the fact is, there just isn't very many of them. Officers train for the "what if" and worst case scenarios that large crowds can invite. When the mere presence of the police is not sufficient, then the sheer number of officers that can and will respond often is. Then there is the investigative arm of the police department, which once again proves its value in this case. If you see a large police presence at games for the rest of this season, that should tell you if it would have made a difference. The LBPD is not limited to only being around areas where large crowds gather..we are still responsible for the entire city and sometimes a call involving one or two people generates a need for a large police response. This is why it is best to have officers dedicated to special events. Absent the two hundred or so more officers Chief Batts requested SEVEN years ago, your option is pay overtime, do with less, or do without. As such we are driven by priorities and reality. The priority and reality that night was the shooting and SWAT activation on the other side of town. Lest we all forget that all the normal calls for service do not stop coming in because a high profile crime occurs elsewhere.

parent wrote: Do you really think the department would provide 3 officers for one hour. I'll bet there are minimums. The school said they were short so the police should be there anyway and not bill them. Why not look at how many units and officers were assigned to each division and where they were that night. How many working. Bet there were more officers working the other divisions. Why does the school have to pay just to roll a few units by for an hour or two while the game lets out. The other divisions could cover. Someone needs to be held accountable as to why the department was not there. It was not the schools problem this was'nt at the game it was on the streets where the police should be anyway.<quoted text> There are minimums involved. This game was sold out on Wednesday I believe. There was a game at Jordan that night and they paid for four officers to provide a presence and security in addition to the school personnel. Wilson is usually the only school that does not pay for LBPD to work their games. The school doesn't have to pay for officers to roll by during dismissals, and the officers do not have to be there if there are higher priority calls going on, which in this case, there were. The "streets" as you call it, is Ximeno which bisects the two Wilson campuses and borders the football stadium complex on the west. That is considered "the campus". If a kid gets hit in the crosswalk by a car, we would all say they got hit "at school". Ultimately the one responsible is the one who decided to bring and then use a gun. We all bear the burden, but it was ultimately his(their) fault.

LBUSD has the option to hire its own people, or contract out. They are required by law to provide security services for their own property. If a crime occurs LBPD will respond if they are called. I'm sure LBPD officers would love to sit at a football game all night and babysit, but they have to handle calls within the city. If you have a problem with the way things are done, tell LBUSD to contract out with LBPD for all their security services and this would give LBUSD a lot more resources like Mathias D was talking about.

I was drinking a large 44 oz Arco Gulp and eating an In & Out extra onions animal style burger at the time. I was the one leaning against the gym wall. I was busy at the time to respond, I say hire LBPD for football games!$90.00 dollars vs a students life. Lets ask head of security and the Super.

Hey June, Blow it out your azzz...Less than one week later, and both of these little crip murderers are in custody. In your little sewing circle existence that might just pass as police doing there job. However, in the world of a law enforcement professional, that is just an "UNFREAKING UNBELIEVABLE" task. Thank you very much jackhole...Now as far as Tony Batts goes, it is better he goes to Oakland than Oakland come here. You figure out what that means. Cops keep a community safe; not city council members, the ACLU, NAACP or the First AME Church. You just keep pointing fingers and posting from the safety of your safe little keyboard and the cops will do battle with these animals in your behalf, with or without your approval. This will go on day in and day out while your awake and while you sleep. And if you want to heap scorn on their heads after you get done reading this crappy daily, so FNNN be it.
