If you think the 'Dogs are good now, just wait two years from now when they sport a lineup of Howard, Hahn, Stigall, Butcher and VanZant.

Sweet Sixteen and beyond ...

That will likely never be the lineup.

Next year, I suppose, this is what we will look like.

PG Zach Hahn
SG Shelvin Mack
SF Willie Veasley
PF Avery Jukes
C Matt Howard
6 Shawn Vanzant
7 DeAundre Cranston
8 Garrett Butcher
9 Chase Stigall

The rest getting mop-up minutes and Gordon Hayward red-shirting to the 2009 class.

Oh yeah, don't forget about 9th-grader, Jordan Hahn, he'll be the next New Castle-to-Butler guard.

Great article!! I would like to add that New Castle product Kent Benson is the Chairman of the fourth annual East/West All-Star Basketball Games held each summer in New Castle "Honoring All Four Classes"..160+ of the top seniors (boys and girls)in the state. If you havent ...check it out at www.postyourt.org ...The Field House is a great place to play!!

Growing up at a neighboring small school, I watched New Castle through the lean years of the early 90s. Even then they were fundamentally sound, which allowed them to compete even in losing. If you've never been, take in a game at NC against an NCC foe like Marion of Muncie Central. It's worth the trip. Great article!

Basketball at it's finest!

Now this is what it's like to live in Indiana, high school and college basketball.

It's what gets me through the winter!

Darnell Archey's game against Louisville in '03 was one of the greatest performances I have ever seen. Probably one of the best pure shooters from Indiana.

Didn't a couple of men named Alford and Benson also attend New Castle High School? Why so many good players from New Castle for such an extended period of time?

Did you know New Castle has (or had) the largest High School Gym in the country at one time. Is it still the largest in Indiana?

You obviously haven't seen Butcher play. The kids a monster and will almost certainly start. I look for him to be the "Matt Howard" of this year by making an immediate impact.

It is the largest in the country, not just in Indiana.

Crazy,

No doubt he will make an impact, did someone in this thread say we wouldn't? He just will not start next year. He'll get a good share of minutes, I'd guess around 20 per, but Willie Veasley is starting at the 3 and he is behind Howard/Jukes/Cranston in the low post rotation.

PS I have been to 6 Edgewood games this year alone, and I have no idea (maybe 10) last year not including the Junior/Senior All Star games in Elletsville, Lafeyette, and New Castle. You were saying?

New Castle is probably the only town in the United States to have had three basketball players to play on a NCAA championship teams:
Marvin Huffman--i940
Kent Benson-----1976
Steve Alford----1987

I am from New Castle and I agree that the current system that the Trojans coaching staff uses prepares the team to compete in the rugged North Central Conference. Coach Bennett's time coaching collegiately has provided him with an understanding of how to maximize the talent of his player's, and how to develop them through the elementary and jr. high school programs.
The Fieldhouse is still the best place to watch a high school game. It still rates as the largest and finest facility of it's type.
To add a name of New Castle alumni to be on national championship teams, Jack Wright was a memember of IU's 1953 team.
