That way even if the unions continue to contest the furloughs, Governor Lingle has the right to lay off workers. Of course in this case it would be only temporary(two months). The state could also look into ways of offering low interest loans to state workers who may have a difficult time surviving financially during those two months.

Governor Lingle, just start the lay offs. The unions are playing games and want to try and look good to their members. So, they rather have lay offs instead of furloughs. Give them what they want.

Hawai`i is blessed with a wonderful climate and spectacular beaches and scenery. The people are kind and generous. Swimming in the pristine waters of the Pacific Ocean restores the body and the mind. I was always impressed with the good value and excellent service at the Outrigger Hotels and the vision of the management and the Kelly family. The Royal Islander on Kalia was a favorite. Close to everything and priced right. I fondly recall the days when the managers hired Hawaiian musicians and dancers to entertain visitors from dawn to dusk. Aloha Oe

Hey State Worker, be a man and take the hit. Accept it. By the way, OPM is for federal workers only.

If they talk about something, it should be to REDUCE the amount of PAID holidays the state workers have. This will lessen the tax burden on the taxpayer.

state government is way too bog and expensive for such a small population to carry. That is really the bottom line. Few want to admit it.

State Worker wrote: How can you blame the unions when Hawaii's top brass are opposed to the furloughing of state workers as well? Let's lay off the top brass, too, and let the common man who is willing to do the job for a reasonable honest day's pay take over. White collars are just as much to blame. I say get rid of ALL of the people serving in office now and wipe the slate clean, elect NEW BLOOD, and start over.

Lay off the entire staff of the Office of Elections. Elections are held every other year and the don't do any work in off election years. I know the truth as to why they did not select the lowest bidder for the lady voting equipment contract.

Have to wonder why the unions are so worried about health benifits when obama has with clinton during their run for office stated that everyone would receive the same health benifits that members of congress receive under his free universal health plan.
