to Poi- stay out of this blog site- you're a "Cali outsider" from the Oakland gettos who knows squat about Hawaii ways...and you know what, your Cali governor (Arnold the Califffonia gov) is worse than Lingle giving out State IOUs to pay its bills...ha!

Typical State Worker. Ask them a question about their job or about the thing their department handles on any given day and they are completely clueless.
But as them about their "rights" and they will recite the Constitution down to the iddy biddy detail.
Interestingly the commentor you are criticizing made some very relevant, practical solutions to help resolve our current budget crisis. That is more than we have seen from our unions and governor. AND IT IS DEFINITELY MORE HELPFUL THAN MOST OF YOU RANTING and RAVING.

Judge was a Plantation Asian Democrat, yes?
But even if he wasn't, bottom line is that Lingle was trying to deal with the economic slowdown and budget deficit by keeping as many state workers employed.
The top heavy in Plantation Asian Democrats in the Unions don't like that because they believe they are entitled to financial support from the non-Plantation Asian (mostly AJA) lower class. They want to force Lingle to make layoffs so the lower seniority less Plantation Asian (less AJA) newbies will be let go.
That's closer to the truth than anything you've suggested thus far.
That's Hawaii.
Deal with it.
Hey poi, you got to get all your info first before you type. Lingle was in violation of chapter 89 in the state constitution, which is collective bargaining, and that's the bottom line. You have to go into talks with the unions first when it deals with union contracts. your ignorance is your lack of knowledge.

The increase in medical comes nowhere near the increases the private sector have received, it's more like a 50% incrase.
A 3 day furlough evidently works out at 13.8%, yet they recieved over a 20% increase in 2006 & 2007.
What is giving the private sector the cold shoulder to these State workers is all they do is whine, hold rallys and when we go to a State agency they are mean spirited yet they are working for us, the tax payers of Hawaii.
It's time for them to stop this unpatriotic behaviour, get back to work and join the community.
I would bet that very few of these State whiners eve do community activities like Boy Scout leaders, Rotarians or Lions, these are just the people who feel they are intitled but never give back to the community.
Well I'm sick and tired of their whining, I'm mad as hell and I'm not going to take it anymore!
Lay them all off, like Ron Reagan did with the air traffic controllers and start all over. There is nothing much wrong with the Friendly Sky's after he took control.
Not all state workers received a 20% raise. As stated by Lingle in previous articles, state workers have received between 14-29% raises over the last six years. Cutting state workers by 14% across the board is clearly not equal when we recognize that some will be back to quare one, while others will be hardly touched.

Furthermore, I would assume that not all private workers give back to their community either. In fact, I'm pretty sure that all the assumptions that private sector workers are making about public workers can be thrown right back at many private sector workers. The arguments made about whining and entitlement are irrational and lack any validity. They are based purely on emotion. The idea that layoffs are a sloution is equally irrational. After all we know that unemployment is at its highest and adding to it, may in fact break the bank!!! What the state needs is innovation, new revenues, and minimal layoffs. Making incendiary comments may make you feel better for a moment... but they don't really help anyone. Let's see what happens when we stop being so quick to judge and assume...

"Union leaders did not return calls yesterday asking for comment.
Lingle said the state made a formal proposal to the Hawaii Government Employees Association and United Public Workers June 16 and they've never responded. The mayors submitted proposals with the state's, some the same and some different, she said."
Unions are slimy buggahz.
No shame.
Read a little further and you get a clearer picture... Lingle is just as slimy!

Per the Star Bulletin:

The state proposal covered wages, layoffs, overtime, vacations and the usual items included in a contract, she said. Furloughs weren't mentioned because the administration thought the governor had the authority to furlough workers for a "fiscal emergency."

Governor Lingle claims that she is willing to negotiate with the unions, yet her only proposals to union officials thus far continue to be monthly three-day furloughs or massive layoffs. Hopefully she and her staff can find other ways of balancing the budget besides 14 percent furloughs and massive layoffs.
The story says Lingle and the Mayors have submitted detailed proposals (separate and apart from the furloughs). Ball is in the union's court to respond.

well its all been said. How about being appreciative for having one state job, you un grateful and ( if your in human resources or social services add rude and pompous )servants of the public. which most of all people arrogance forget. You should of had your own hurricane/yada yada fund for this day.
As for the governor and the crooked politicians (unethical) where is the money, is in the General taxes so the public doesn't know what you are doing with it! I paid 11 cents everytime I buy a Arizonz ice tea X that by a million people = were is the money? Federal Funds... more than we need we have to make up things to fix where is the money? Examole a few years (4 years ago) I read in the news Hawaii recieved 36 + million for drug rehab and services. where did that money go. People get rid of all the incumbents, threaten to not vote for the big crooks, you know who they are!they are the most likeable canidate's. Aiona,Hannamin, Carlise,Its ok to like them, but the've been tainted and in the corruption to long.

Need I remind you that the captain of ship Hawaii is the same person that introduced us to that mental giant "sarah palin". You expect her to figure out how to effectively manage the budget shortfall? All the republicans know is to go after union workers...even though they are the same people that keep the state running on a day to day basis....reverse Robin Hood....steal from the poor and working class and give tax breaks to the rich...yes the old bush doctrine...your governor is not negotiating she is dictating her loosing, political philosophy.

Yhea good idea to take money out of the Hurricane Relief Fund or the rainy day fund. How about the Unions taking a bit of responsibility? Your contract is up soon right? Get rid of the Unions and maybe you will see work go up and prices falling. It is called privitization!!
No...prices will skyrocket because now the agencies can begin to charge the customers! Lucky the customers get everything for free right now! No unions mean no pay!

The unions did respond...they went to court to challenge the furloughs! It's Linda who's the SLIMY one! And the mayors, I doubt that some was same and some different because NONE of the county mayors backed up Linda Lingle (including the sole republican from Maui)! Tell Linda to stop lying and begin telling the truth!

Once again, just an attack.

No response to my point.

Just a "go home".

I know plenty about Hawaii. More than you I bet.

I thought about going away.... but then I decided, naahhhh, i stay.

PS California has been ruined by total Democrat control as well. Both states are going down and I'm enjoying watching it.

Here's a good example: Recently Attorney General Mark Bennett tried to push hard to have the unions air their dispute in front of the Hawaii Labor Relations Board. Guess what? The 3 members of this board are Lingle appointees! And to add fuel to the fire, the state administration has accused the unions of seeking a sympathetic judge to hear this case. So who's really the one promoting a climate of distrust?

Union workers who get their salaries paid for with "federal", NOT "state" funds.

Good one. It's hurricane season. Use the hurricane releif fund so that the government workers don't have to share the load with the private sector, and then we have a hurricane this year. Brilliant! Your unions should have accepted the furloghs. Now you gonna loose your jobs. Another bright idea brought to you by our government employees and thier unions.

No one in their right mind will deny that the ball is in the unions court. However I still firmly believe that the Governor should have presented the unions with more options to choose from besides 3-day furloughs or massive layoffs.

Problem with your perspective is you feel it's the governors responsibility to present the unions two options; raid the hurricane fund or raise the GET.
Since she is against both it ain't going to happen.
Unless they have a third, it's people like you (union member perhaps) why the situation is where it's at. Wise up!

GET RID OF UNIONS!!!!!!PROBLEM SOLVED$$$$$$
Got to get rid of the UNION elected legislators first. There would be no need to furlough or layoff workers if the Reps and Senators got off their a**es and got rid of the pork barrel and other wastes in government. Their only solution is to raise taxes so everyone loses.
