"I'm concerned about people's first impression of Waynesboro. And the things that are up there now do not give people a very good first impression of Waynesboro.

This is what 1400 people are saying about The Mountain on FB https://www.facebook.com/photo.php...

Absolute eyesore!

This one spot, the top of the mountain holds the key to tourism in the valley below. It is a shame it has degraded to this.

The entire top of the mountain leading up to the tourism building needs addressing. Mr Dulaney needs to take care of the disaster he has allowed to happen. The buildings and restaurant are in disrepair and are a hazard to the general public. It is an eyesore, and does not give a good impression to anyone that is coming to Waynesboro or the Shenandoah Valley. I hope someone looks into getting this issue resolved and getting Mr Dulaney to step up and take responsibility for the mess. Please clean up Afton Mt and make it an inviting place to visit.

Yes, this is at the entrance to Shenandoah National Park. Millions of people see this every year. It's sad and pathetic. It could definitely be turned in a nice place again. I used to love to go up there.

A bed and breakfast with a hiker hostel and a pleasant restaurant and a gift shop would turn this into a great place.

I would say the dilapidated state of the place probably costs the surrounding communities millions of dollars as tourists decide to just move along rather than spend time in the area.

"I'm a business owner. I put up people and I get a lot of traffic off of the Parkway and the Skyline Drive, a whole bunch of traffic," said Bill Aldridge.

Well there's your short-term 'portable water' solution. Moving the center to the valley won't increase traffic.

If tourists have to drive more than a half mile off an exit they will never visit a tourist center. Someone just wants a shorter commute.

Every building on top of the mountain needs to be razed! I can't believe the counties have let these eyesores remain standing. The simpliest solution to the visitor centers water problem would be to run water from that slumlords motel. It's hard to believe that anyone is allowed to enter those buildings, and yet someone collects rent and people live there.

Including Swannanoah ?

The water problem can be fixed literally in a couple hours . 1500 gal potable water truck and a trip to True Value Hardware in Waynesboro .
It's the bureaucratic red tape that hold up progress.

Neither you nor I have the right to tell a Man how to handle his property.

If that were my business , the doors would have never closed . I can carry 5 gal buckets from the Inns water tower or run a garden hose.

It's not rocket science nor is ingenuity holding this up, its bureaucrats holding up progress.

Go under the interstate ? For the love of GOD , you cab drill a well or bury a cistern before you tear down the mountain for a gallon of water.

It's a double wide trailer , where do you go from there = DOWNHILL

For years I told my son how great and fun AFton mountain was when I was young. He was very excited, as was I to go see what I was talking about for all of these years. I was embarrassed almost ashamed to show my family wife included what it looked like now. Someone should be held accountable !!

The citizens of this area need to demand that this Afton be declared condemned forcing this guy to take action, if he chooses not to then the gubment can clean it up at his expence. Its up to you.

My Grandmother was born on Afton Mountain in 1896, my Father and I were raised in the Valley.
I am embarrassed and saddened by what has become of this part of the mountain.
What was once a treasured tourist destination has become a slum. What is left of the motel and restaurant is a health and safety concern.
I really hope this situation can be remedied in my lifetime.

Swannanoah(first learn to spell it) is not the topic of this report, I did not say level the mountain! The fine folks that work at the tourist center are volunteers, they did not volunteer to go back and forth to W'boro. Maybe you should volunteer and carry the 5 gallon buckets of water for them. Du you honestly think the city or county would let you rent out property in that condition? That eyesore, firetrap, rodent infested needs tore down at the landowners expense. Don't bother mowing your grass this year and see how long it takes before you get complaints!!

The top of Afton used to be known as the gateway to the valley. The hotel there was a excellent place for honeymooners, school reunions, Christmas parties...the restaurants there had great food! After Delaney bought it many many years ago and filled peoples heads with hollow promises it all went down hill. He didn't keep his word on anything and refuses to sell it to someone who will make it beautiful again. This is pure selfishness and greed. Unfortunately the area straddles two counties and neither really wants to step up and do something about it. Get angry people and demand that something be done about the eyesore and health hazard there.
The tourist information center should not be in a double wide trailer with that ugly backdrop. It should be as it was many years ago. People were encouraged to stop and spend time in our beautiful mountain/valley area but now.....
Someone needs to explain to the public why this has been allowed to get worse by the year with no action on making it better.

It is a shame that it is closed too. The whole mountain is in shambles and now this! We want people to come to the area to visit the gorgous scenic view on top of Afton Mtn. and all we give them is a run down mountain top and a visitors center that is now closed. The state needs to get involved and take over to clean up the mess and make Afton the mountain that it once was.

It is not welcoming at all and gives a horrible impression to tourist to both the Augusta Co/Waynesboro and Nelson Co. sides of the mountain. A shack is a deplorable excuse for a tourist information center. The state of which the whole Rockfish Gap mountaintop has seemed to been allowed a decay is just plain pitiful. It could be such a great spot for both people that live here as well as tourists coming to the area.

To everyone that has posted a comment. Some of us may look at this problem as no problem at all. It's Dulaneys property and his has the right to do with it what he wants. If you live in the county of Augusta and do not upkeep buildings, junked cars, property and such and someone complains, the county will send someone to your house and ask that you fix these things according to the appropriate code. If you don't you can be taken to court or fined or both. Why doesn't this happen up there? I had to contact the State Fire Marshall to get Fire codes brought up to code and when Dulaney went to court the attorneys and judge laughed at the fact that he was even brought into court over this. Well excuse me Mr. Dulaney, but you are letting people and probably children with them stay in that building. What happens when someone gets hurt or worse killed. Who will be laughing then? Prostitution in the parking lot! Don't believe me-go up there and see the condoms thrown all over the parking lot. I am through playing nice. I attend on going to the news agencies and putting out for the public to see. Please join our cause if you love this mountain and wish to see it beautiful once again.
