Now it lives on with you til the day you die? Think of them. They have to live with this forever. They made a mistake, they confessed. Give it a break. Let the boy decide what happens to them. One guy was planning on going into the army or some thing like that. It's ruined now.
Yes we all make mistakes but if they were sorry and felt bad would they continue to do these things. Its one thing when you feel horrible but decide your going to make a change for the better. Its another when you continue to do wrong things.

This is so stupid. If these were college boys, would anybody care? It was intended as a joke. not as a sexual assault. I am a parent of a young boy. If he was to have this happen to him I would be a little upset and want them to be punished, but not expelled from school. It sounds as though some one is needing a little attention, and it's not the boys that were involved. Give them a fine, or community service. Bullying is a serious issue, but it doesn't sound as though they were intending on it being a bullying event. Sounds more like an initiation. People are stupid and sue happy these days. When I was in high school, boys would do this stupid stuff to each other all the time and it would be amongst friends. Grow up and remember what it is like to be a kid. This is stupid and shouldn't even be making headlines. Mom.....You rediculous and embarrassing your child for making such a fuss. If anybody should be punished it should be you!!!!

While I do agree with the fact that these boys should be severely punished, I do not agree with everyone saying that Annawan is a bad school. No one is looking at this from a students point of view. We have to listen to everyone say how Annawan students are racist and Annawan school gets away with everything because they just cover things up. THIS IS NOT THE SCHOOLS FAULT. They cannot have coaches in the locker room the whole time the guys are changing otherwise you people would say he's another teacher trying to sleep with the students. It's not like the school encourages this behavior, and we're definitely not the only school to have problems. The reason no one told or helped out was because it was a joke. THE VICTIM EVEN TOLD PEOPLE IT WAS A JOKE. This does not mean that the 3 boys should get away with it, but it shouldn't be seen as a "hate crime" or being "jumped". Every adult on here has their own opinion that they think is completely correct and that they know everything when really they know absolutely nothing. None of these adults commenting walk the halls of Annawan every day. None of these adults commenting see how these boys interact on a daily basis. NONE OF YOU HAVE ANY RIGHT TO JUDGE ANNAWAN SCHOOL AND STUDENTS BASED ON THE STAFF AND 3 STUDENTS FROM THE SCHOOL. You are pretty much stereotyping that everyone in the school is like that when we aren't. If you're going to post your opinion on the sentencing then that's completely okay, but if you're posting to judge the school and students who are not involved with this then think again.
I agree with above as far as not everyone is racist BUT the issue here is how Annawan has over and over swept problems under the rug especially if a coomunity name is involved. This has been going on for years and it is time it should stop. They are making the victim the criminal and that is wrong, the school board knows what happened and they should take aciton. It is difficult to take action when Daddy is sitting on the board ( or was) and Mom is a teacher in the system. Do you think the victim will get a fair representation? And the victim does not have the right last name!!!

I wish I could say this story is shocking. Unfortunately, this type of behavior is commonplace in our schools. I commend this family for speaking up, reporting to authorities and doing the right thing in spite of the stress it is causing them. My own son was treated similarly in grade school. I reported the behaviior and nothing was done because the boys were "popular" athletes from prominent families. The school turned its head. This behavior plays a role in violence and suicide in our teens. I sincerely hope this situation results in severe consequences for these three boys so they realize its not a joke and it will not be tolerated - ever. Teens who are allowed to abuse and bully become the abusers and bullies of future marriages, families and workplaces!

O.k...let's face it...as an Annawan alumni I know all-too-well that this behavior has gone on for quite sometime at good ol' AHS, only now someone has come forward and is standing their ground...kudos to you Amy! I'd lawyer up if I were you, you've got some serious grounds.
And why-pray-tell are these young 'circle jerks' only being charged with one count of aggravated battery, their misconduct was sexual in nature, which should also carry a felony charge of aggravated sexual assault. Oh...could it be that perhaps we don't want our elite young athletes to have to file as registered sex offenders? I get it!
What you all need to get, is that if Troy VanOpdorp would've been reported earlier in his day, he wouldn't have gone on to sexually abuse young boys in his dentist chair.
And to you LuAnn Coppejans...I question your moral backbone, not-to-mention, your ethical standards. Let's get this straight, you want to solicit prayer for a couple of 'circle jerks' that sexually abused a young man? Hmmm...Karma needs to smack you around a bit, and rightfully so! They say that ignorance is bliss, I guess the old-adage holds true for you. Perhaps, you were once one of the holders of good ol''Zeb', I'm sure you can recollect, eh? You are truly an embarrassment to your profession, your community and your school, you need enlightenment sister!
If these young men are merely given a smack-on-the-hand and allowed to return, I fear for the future of this school. Brave? Not-so-much!
Amy, I would seriously push to seek advocacy through the Henry Co. Victims Assistant; Brenda Kopp. Any more hearings would go through her office, treat this as a sex-crime and not a battery.

Seems funny to me that it took so long for
this issue to hit the press. The school
was going to hide the embarrassment just
like all the other incidents that have
been going in Annawan over the past few
years. If some of those kids had been
correctly punished then this incident
probably would never have happened.
Someone has to be an example.
There should be no tolerance for sexual
harassment. Let the court decide and let
this go. Hopefully the students will learn
that there are consequences for your actions
and think twice before they act. How do we
teach our kids good morals if we continue
to let these things go on.

So what happened to the notorious saying "innocent until proven guilty" does that not apply anymore or what? everyone is making accusations but no one has both sides of the story yet. if you do then so be it but for everyone else you all need to get the correct facts and quit making assumptions about those three boys. its pretty sad that just because he is bi-racial everyone thinks that he didnt go along with this joke, of course jump to conclusions right away. I thought that race wasnt an issue in the world anymore so what does it matter if he is black white purple or green?
I do not think the three boys/men are innocent of what they did to this young boy. There is even a witness. Get off the bi-racial and understand there is a more serious problem. These three boys/men need to have charges for what they did. Just because their parent or parents are someone at the school or community doesn't matter. This is probably why they think they can get away with things like this. Mommy and Daddy will bail me out. They haven't learned that it was wrong before. So mommy and daddy need to grow up and teach their children what is right and what is wrong.

If boys are just playing around and choose to participate in this type of behavior willingly....well, I guess "boys will be boys" is an acceptible excuse. But "Tea bagging" is a sick, disguisting act that borders on sexual assault when it is committed against their will. From what I am reading, it sounds like this boy was minding his own business and was ambushed while he had his shirt over his head. And if a bystander felt it was concerning enough to report to the school without the victim's knowlege it must have been bad. I think "thou dost protest too much" Anonymous, sounds a little like you might be defending your own past.

Not surprised by BOLOGNA's comments.
A name like Bologna is actually a thin piece of meat not worth anything.
Small piece of meat, small simple mind.
No need for the rest of his story.
He has to talk big, due to nothing else going for him.
Obviously no children of his own and if there are then I'm sure they are or will be bulliers that do pranks.

I could not believe this story. Where are the coaches? Why are they not in the locker room just to make sure nothing happens. You would think high school boys would not have to be supervised, but look what happens. I am hoping that just because they are basketball stars they do not get a lean sentence. I am also hoping for the the 14 year old he does not get treated badly for sticking up for himself against sports stars. No one should be treated like this.

I am sorry you didn't have a good childhood and was taught that this behavior is allowed. This isn't a joke. No one should have to go through this at any age. We may remember what happened when we are kids and are now grown up and do not want this to happen to anyone else anymore.

Is he living/or will be living at the Annawan Hotel? as his parents are too close to the school so he cannot reside with them. as well as his brother is not far enough from the school to live with him and the nieces and nephews and wife and play life guard? But maybe becasue of who we are we can get that accomplished. Again if this is not gospil( as we tend to think prayer makes this behavior acceptable) i appoligize in advance.
and just in case your wondering i am the same person that posted question on brenda kopp--no need for an education to figure that out so do not waste your time.

Perhaps, and in that case, another advocate would be assigned where there may be conflicting circumstances. Whatever the circumstance, these hearings by now should be well out of the hands of school administrators.

Its a sad day to be a Brave! I would encourage everyone with a plan and a voice to show up at the school board meeting thursday. I believe the annawan tax payers would vote closely with the news channel 8 polls on how this incident should be handled. I feel 80% of residents want justice served and our school to be a safe place. Values restored!!! We can start by removing the criminals from our school and apologizing to the victim! Next step, get a clean start and rebuild with better leaders. We need to look deeper into our staffing model and their values. Coaching staff must be removed and held accountable for player actions. Complete failure to do the job. It appears we have the wrong people leading and teaching our students. Student actions reflect leadership. The entire staff. Its easy to point the finger at the students that assaulted the young man. It will require vision and a strong board to correct the root problems. Restore our proud school and secure bright futures for our students.
I totally agree. I remember when Annawan was one of the most professional schools in the area. AT that time, the leadership was outstanding, and due to the examples that the prevoius administrators set so was the student body. Students need proper guidance during these formative years. AT the present time this is lacking in Annawan Schools.
