Defense keys Gophers' first win at Purdue since 1990

Full story: TwinCities.com

In its first game as a ranked team in three years, the University of Minnesota played out of character at times for three quarters with nine penalties and showed little offensive punch, but it still found a way ...

Good report Marcus. I watched the game, and the Gophers played with emotion and enthusiasm like I have not seen for decades, resulting in some stupid penalties. It is part of the learning curve, now CoachBrew will harness some of that emotion, keep the team at a high level, and the foolish penalties will disappear. Good Job Gophers!!!! and thanks for the report Marcus.:-)

Unlike MoorheadDon, I only have basic cable. I assumed that with ESPN & ESPN2 plus the Big Ten Network I would be able to see the Gophs who are ranked 25th nationally. But the game was on ESPN Classic. When I called Comcast to check on it, there was a whiny recording about how Comcast didn't have any control over which network carried it. However, if you had spent the extra $ for a higher level package you could find it on some three digit station. MoorheadDon, I am glad you enjoyed the game. ESPN and the major networks, the Big Ten, and my cable provider managed to keep me and hundreds of others from seeing it. I pay plenty for cable. Maybe it is time to buy a dish.(Glad the good guys won.)

Hopefully Green continues to play well, Spry isn't starter material and needs to be permanently unseated from the starting line-up. It's simply amazing how the Defense has turned around from last year-it has been a remarkable improvement.

Flash, Dish definately beats cable my friend. You will get ESPN CLassic and ESPN U as well as the NFL Network...not to mention that the packages are considerably less expensive. In addition, the sports PPV packages are second to none.(I swear I don't work for DirecTV or Dish Network)

Patience is a virtue, sports fans, and this proves what many of us have been saying to the fair weather prognosticators; take this season one game at a time. The Gophers are learning and rebuilding with a new coach and very young team. Like a well home cooked meal, a good football team takes time to prepare, season, and cook. Building a stable and stalwart football program foundation doesn't happen overnight when the ingredients for such are not apparent.
This season is slowing showing all of us that good things happen to those that are patient and wait. Minnesota is a very unique university with different football traditions than schools like OSU, Michigan, and Penn State etc.. Minnesota had glory years but also had its inordinate share of lousy years.

It is now time to slowly turn and look away from the incongruities of past seasons to look forward to the promise of the good things to come. Let the coach and players do their appointed tasks and continue learning from their mistakes etc.. Minnesota football will prevail if we as fans allow it to season and cook. Support the Gophers for good things do come to pass. Go Minnesota!!!

I have to laugh ( ha ha ) at some of you Gopher knuckleheads. Purdue sucks this year. The only talented team the gophers played this year has been Ohio State. Lets see what the goophers can do against Michigan, Wisconsin, Northwestern and Iowa. The goophs might beat Michigan. The other 3 are sure losses.
Oh, yeah of little Gopher faith!!! Good teams take time to season and cook/fire on all cylinders. The season isn't over yet. Just keep supporting the Gophers!

Unlike Jack, I think all the remaining games are winnable and the Gophs will probably be favored in each. Big win today, no matter how you look at it. The only thing, Adam Weber, please don't key on Decker quite so much. Your TE was open 4 times with nobody within 15 yards of him.

Keep on winning, and who knows...

So with your thought process... an 8 win season compared to a 1 win season is the same? They are winning the games they are supposed to win and they are still a joke? If you're not a fan of the team, that is fine. But don't for one second try to think this isn't a successful season! First, it was the Gophers are only winning the cakewalk teams. Now they are winning CONFERENCE games and still hearing "that team sux". C'mon!

It was not pretty, but another road win show the program is improving.

Marcus, we were not already bowl bound. Had we lost out we would have sat at home.

We have a very good chance to win next week. The NU QB has a hamstring and could not bend his leg by the end of the IU game. I do not know why the football gods have decided to be kind to us this year, but next week will be our second game in a row against a throwing team with no QB. Nice, I'll take 'em.

Our O- line is horrid, the running backs are not real fast or strong and Weber is lucky to still be alive. Without him and Decker we would have no O.

We are so fortunate this year to have Roof, Sherels, WVDS and Lawrence. 13 penalties for 114 yards and we still won. Stupid, but this year nothing seems to matter.

The defense did a good job, especially keeping Purdue out of the endzone. They also did a great job of stopping momentum with the turnover margin in the game. GO GOPHERS!!!

Congratulations Gophers! Keep it going! Just remember - you win by playing the game, not running your mouth. Let your actions speak for themselves. Learn from this game! Self control - self control - self control!!

FINALLY we get a chance to see what Brandon Green can do! I think he can be the #2 receiver to open things up for Decker. Our O-Line is SO young that at times they just get manhandled and other times just whiff on an assignment. It shows what a tough guy Weber is. The defense this year is just unbelievable compared to last year. Being from Rochester and with my wife from Glencoe we pretty much cheer for Marcus Sherels and Willie Van Duh-Steeg!!! But I've gotta say, Simoni Lawrence is a BEAST!!! Go Gophers! I'll be at all three home games. We are now in 3rd Place in the Big Ten!

I was able to watch the game on ESPN 360 .
Great game , the gophers played with some real emotion. A couple of bad penalties, especially by Hightower. Purdue has still been tough this year.
Hoping Gophers can win 9 games this year.
